Dialects Formerly a Tibeto-Burman language, but culturally and linguistically Hinduized and Bengalized (Breton 1997).
Classification Indo-European, Indo-Iranian, Indo-Aryan, Eastern zone, Bengali-Assamese
Language use Speakers are shifting to Assamese.
Language development Assamese script.
