FOR RELEASE AT WILL
Appalachian Chancellor Frank Borkowski to Take Medical Leave of Absence; Provost Harvey Durham Named Acting Chancellor
BOONE - UNC President Molly Corbett Broad has granted Appalachian State University Chancellor Frank Borkowski a medical leave of absence that is expected to last approximately four weeks. Effective immediately, Broad has appointed long-time Provost Harvey Durham acting chancellor.
In announcing Durham’s appointment, Broad said: "I support Chancellor Borkowski’s decision to follow his physician’s advice in seeking a leave of absence, and we look forward to his return to office. In the meantime, Appalachian is fortunate that Provost Harvey Durham has agreed to assume even greater responsibilities on behalf of this great institution. Having served as its chief academic officer for the past 24 years, he is exceptionally qualified to assume temporary stewardship of the Appalachian campus. His vast administrative experience and his demonstrated devotion to Appalachian ensure that the campus will be in good hands."
After earning his doctorate at the University of Georgia, Durham joined Appalachian’s faculty as a math professor in 1965. Appointed chair of the Department of Mathematics in 1967, he was named associate vice chancellor in 1974 and assumed his current post in 1979. He announced last fall his plans to retire from the University at the end of June.
