KINGS OF THE WORLD: THE CURLING RICHARDSONS Saturday March 13, 2004 at 1PM on CBC-TV
repeating Saturday March 13, 2004 at 7PM & 1AM ET & Sunday March 14 at 8PM & 1AM ET on CBC Newsworld The one-hour documentary tells the story of four young men from Saskatchewan who dominated the Canadian and world curling scenes in the late 1950's and early 1960's. The skilful play and colourful styles that Ernie Richardson, brother Garnet (Sam) Richardson and cousins Arnold and Wes Richardson brought to the game created new interest in the sport, and won them four Canadian and four World Championships. The documentary explores the life and times of Canada's first World Championship curling team through interviews with the Regina Richardsons, sports journalists and curling rivals who tasted defeat at the hands of the Richardson dynasty. There's also the little-known story of how Sam Richardson helped guide Newfoundland to its first and only Brier title in 1976. The story features remarkable archival footage of the Richardson's in competition at the Brier as well as at the World Championships. The program also features Ernie Richardson's appearance on the classic CBC Television show, Front Page Challenge, as well as the launch of Richardson curling apparel, the first ever line of personal curling clothes.
