Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why is PATH installing new Vending Machines in its stations?
PATH is installing new Vending Machines as part of our new fare collection system. This system also features new turnstiles, which have already been installed in all PATH stations system-wide, and will conclude with the introduction of the SmartLink Fare Card later next year.
2. What do the new PATH Vending Machines sell?
The larger of the new vending machines, which accept cash, debit and credit cards, currently sell the PATH Single Ride Ticket, which is valid at PATH stations for two hours from the time of purchase, as well as the Pay-Per-Ride (Regular) MetroCard, which is accepted at all PATH turnstiles.

The smaller of the new vending machines ONLY accept credit and debit cards for payment, and ONLY sell the Pay-Per-Ride (Regular) MetroCard.
3. How can I buy a round-trip PATH Ticket?
Purchase a $3.00 MetroCard at a new PATH vending machine for round-trip travel on PATH.
4. When will the new PATH Vending Machines be installed in all stations?
Testing of machines installed at the World Trade Center and the 30th Street entrance of the 33rd Street station is in progress. Upon successful completion of testing, PATH will install these new vending machines in our New York Stations, and then proceed to our New Jersey Stations.
5. Why don't the new PATH Vending Machines sell QuickCard?
PATH will phase out QuickCard once the SmartLink Fare Card is introduced. Until then, QuickCards are still available at NJ Transit ticket vending machines, at QuickCard vendors in or near PATH stations, and online where you can purchase a 40-Trip QuickCard in conjunction with NJ Transit's Quik-Tik program by clicking here.
6. Why are new turnstiles being installed across Platform H at Newark Penn Station?
PATH is installing new turnstiles on Platform H to help PATH have an accurate entrance and exit count for its entire system. In addition, when PATH service operates only from Platform H, the new turnstiles will accept fares.
7. What tickets do PATH's new turnstiles accept? Can I use my MetroCard in the new turnstiles?
PATH's new turnstiles accept the PATH QuickCard, the PATH SingleRide Ticket, and the Pay-Per-Ride (Regular) MetroCard ONLY. PATH turnstiles do not accept MTA Single Trip tickets or any Unlimited Ride MetroCard.
8. Where can I get help with a problem or an expired QuickCard or MetroCard?
If you have questions or need a replacement QuickCard, please see a red-jacketed Passenger Information Agent, who can find out the remaining value of your unexpired QuickCard and issue a replacement on-the-spot. PATH will not replace any remaining trips on any expired QuickCard.

Agents are available at Newark, Hoboken, Journal Square and Grove Street stations weekdays during the morning peak and at 33rd Street Station weeknights during the evening peak. If you use a station not served by a Passenger Information Agent, please pick up any in-station Passenger Information Telephone or call us directly at 1-800-234-PATH (7284) for assistance.

Customers experiencing difficulties with their MetroCard should call (212) 638-7622 (within New York City), or 1-800-METROCARD (outside New York City) for assistance. If you are having a MetroCard problem while in a PATH station, you may either (1) seek assistance from a Passenger Information Agent, (2) pick up any in-station Passenger Information Telephone, call us directly at 1-800-234-PATH (7284), or (3) seek assistance from any New York City subway station booth agent.

Please treat your QuickCard or MetroCard as you would cash, as PATH will not replace any lost or stolen QuickCard or MetroCard. In addition, PATH will not replace any remaining trips on any expired QuickCard or any value on any expired MetroCard.
9. Where can I buy QuickCards with TransitChek?
Please click here to see the PATH QuickCard page with its list of newsstands and shops that sell QuickCards and accept TransitChek.
10. How can I get a Senior Fare Application form?
Applications are in terminals at 33rd Street, Hoboken, Newark, World Trade Center and Journal Square. They are also available online by clicking here, and by telephone at 201-216-6247.
11. Why can't you operate more trains overnight?
PATH service operates on a 30-minute schedule during overnight hours. This allows essential track, signal and station maintenance to be performed from 12 Midnight to 5 AM. The 30-minute schedule allows trains to operate in both directions using the same tunnel or track. Most of the maintenance on PATH occurs during these hours to minimize the impact on train service.
12. When is the Christopher and 9th Street Station closed for cleaning?
9th Street Station is closed on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month from 11:59 PM Sunday until 5:00 AM. Monday for thorough station cleaning.

Christopher Street Station is closed on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month from 11:59 PM Sunday until 5:00 AM for thorough station cleaning.

If a month has a 5th Sunday, neither station is closed for cleaning. No station cleaning is done on holidays.
13. When did the World Trade Center and Exchange Place Stations open?
PATH reopened Exchange Place Station on June 29, 2003 and the temporary World Trade Center Station on November 23, 2003. A new crossover switch was installed at Exchange Place to allow trains to change direction until a new World Trade Center Station is in operation. In the future, this switch will also allow for the first time single-track operations from the World Trade Center Station for construction and maintenance work.

Major work projects completely replaced the track and all systems inside the two tunnels from Exchange Place to the World Trade Center site because of water damage from broken water mains and fire fighting efforts.
