Citizens from other countries the German-speaking Community

Out of the 71,571 inhabitants of the German-speaking Community (dated 1st January 2003), 58,951 are Belgians and 12,620 foreigners, which gives a proportion of foreigners as 17.63% (compared to 8.21 % for the whole of Belgium).
Most of them come from EU member states. Here is the list of the most represented countries:

  • Germany: 10,323 persons
  • The Netherlands: 695 persons
  • Spain: 200 persons
  • Luxembourg: 199 persons
  • France: 142 persons
  • Poland: 80 persons

98 persons come from an Asian country (mainly Pakistan, India and Thailand), 84 are Africans (mainly coming from Morocco) and 18 are American citizens.

The foreigners’ proportions within the total population of the community once again reveal that there is a big difference between the north and the south. Out of the 12,620 foreign inhabitants,

  • 11,222 persons live in the district of Eupen (88.92 %)
  • only 1,398 live in the district of St. Vith (5.21 %)

This difference is explained by the fact that the district of Eupen is close to the big urban cities Aachen, Cologne and Düsseldorf.
