Definition: Surgical removal of the cervix (but not the rest of the uterus).
A radical trachelectomy is when the cervix and surrounding tissue is removed, along with some pelvic lymph nodes. This procedure is sometimes performed when a young woman with early cervical cancer wants to preserve her fertility. It is still considered an experimental approach by most physicians.
