"...George Washington did not take his oath of office in front of this building but, rather, its predecessor, the former city hall, called Federal Hall. It had been remodeled by Pierre L'Enfant from the old shell, to which local government had been removed in 1701 from the Dutch Stadt Huys on Pearl Street. The current name, Federal Hall National Memorial, commemorates the earlier structure.

This Doric-columned temple and Staten Island's Sailors' Snug Harbor are the institutional stars of New York's Greek Revival. The Wall Street fa�ade is a simplified Parthenon, without the sculptured frieze of pediment. Carved from marble quarried in Westchester County, it is raised on a high base to handle the change in grade from Pine to Wall (streets). Inside the rectangular volume is a very non-Greek rotunda, the principal, and startling, space—rather like finding a cubical space in a helical conch shell."
