Canada at the 1988 Summer Olympics

Introduction :
The Games of the XXIV Olympiad or the 1988 Summer Olympics was hosted by South Korea in Seoul. Cuba and North Korea had boycotted the games. Ethiopia, Seychelles and Nicaragua could not afford to send their athletes for economic reasons. An important event is the return of tennis after the absence of 64 years. The opening ceremony was on September 17 and the closing ceremony was on October 2nd .For the first time in the history of Olympics all the dressage events were won by women. 159 countries including Canada had participated in the 1988 Summer Olympics. Canada at the 1988 Summer Olympics showed a better performance.

Participation of Canada at the 1988 Summer Olympics :
This was a memorable Summer Olympics for the Canadians . The reason was that Ben Johnson had won the gold medal and also set a world record in the men�s 100 m. however he was stripped of the medal and the record after testing positive for steroids. Canada had sent a contingent of men and women athletes, shooters, archers, boxers, swimmers, men�s basket ball and hockey team, women�s hockey team and tennis players.

Performance and Medal tally of Canada at the 1988 Summer Olympics :
Gold medals were awarded to Lennox Lewis for participating in boxing, men's Super Heavyweight, Carolyn Waldo for her participation in synchronized swimming, women's Solo and also to the swimmers Carolyn Waldo and Michelle Cameron for their participation in synchronized swimming, women�s duet. Silver was bagged by the men�s team in swimming 4x100m medley relay and was also awarded to Egerton Marcus -Boxing, men's Middleweight. The bronze medals were won by Dave Steen (athletics) in men�s decathlon, Raymond Downey in men�s light middleweight boxing, women�s equestrian, dressage team competition, swimming women�s 4 x100m medley relay and by the sailing team in the men�s flying Dutchman team competition. Many athletes could not advance beyond the round one or the semi finals.
