Orientation OTAGO! E-mail
Written by Rob

The Studentville team arrived in Dunedin on a Sunday night and was in a pub with jug in hand thirty minutes after arrival. Six or so hours later we went home nice and drunk and sure to wake up with hangovers in the morning as we would for the rest of the week along with 20,000 other students.

Nothing can compare to an Otago O-Week. no disrespect to the other campuses it's just on another level compared to all the others. This Otago O-Week like any other I have been to did not fail to deliver. The Studentville team arrived in Dunedin on a Sunday night and was in a pub with jug in hand thirty minutes after arrival. Six or so hours later we went home nice and drunk and sure to wake up with hangovers in the morning as we would for the rest of the week along with 20,000 other students.

So Monday morning came and the heads were a little sore but we got out there and started to get it done. A highlight of every O-Week is the good old toga party and parade. So we went along and filmed both and watched as the freshers cut loose and had a bloody good time. We talked to a lot of them and a lot of them yelled and screamed back at us - it was great fun for all involved. We also went along to the Cookathon which is an event that is held every O-week at the Captain Cook Tavern. For a small fee you get 3 meals and a t-shirt and you sit there all day with your mates and have a bloody good time getting on it. This event however starts at ten in the morning and by 7 at night nearly ever one has had enough and gone home to crash. Bloody good times. No O-Week is complete without a trip to the rugby and this year it seems that over 4000 students agreed with me and turned out on mass to bath in the sun and chop beers, some of them even watched the game. The Highlanders even managed a win for the crowd and a four try bonus point to match. We also spent a little time on the streets just chilling - special thanks to the girls on Hyde St who did the interpretive dance for us.

This year in Dunedin they have a Campus Watch that is part of their new code of conduct which basically means if you fuck up they can arse you out of uni if they feel the need. Now the general feeling around the campus seems to be that they are out to snitch on people and generally be fun police. Which to a degree is true, they are however only doing there jobs. But with stories going around that they are knocking on peoples doors at 7 in the morning telling them to clean up the bottles in there front yard you have to wonder what the PC world is coming too. I predict that before the end of the year there will be an incident involving one if these campus dudes and some Uni student who will no doubt be in a deep pile of shit.

All in all O-Week in Otago was awesome and will always be awesome. I'm already looking forward to next year.
