THE FESTIVITY OF ST. BLAISE IN DUBROVNIK
The celebrations of St. Blaise – the patron saint of Dubrovnik – has been celebrated without interruption since the year 972. February 03rd is not only a religious holiday for it is also the Day of the City of Dubrovnik. Of the many events held during the celebrations, three are most important: Candlemas (February 02nd), when the city banners gather in front of the Church of St. Blaise and when the «pigeons of peace» are released, and when the St. Blaise flag is raised on Orlando's Column; the Day of St. Blaise (February 03rd) when banners from all the surrounding parishes come to the city and participate in the procession following mass along with the huge crowds; the end of the celebrations (February 05th) after the mass held on the Mount of St. Blaise in Lapad and the lowering of the St. Blaise flag.

This festivity has many variious events that have been held for centuries. For example, a special evening with a special menu is held on Candlemas , and the City Board hands out public awards to deserving citizens, companies and insitutions during a ceremonial session. Of particular interest is the manner in which the two «festanjuls» are chosen, as one has to be a craftsman and the other a seaman. They hold a very important role in the organization of this event.
