Gary Merasty Steps Down as Member of Parliament for Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill
OTTAWA – Gary Merasty, Member of Parliament for Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River, announced today that he will resign his position as MP on August 31, 2007, to pursue an opportunity in the private sector.
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce my resignation from the Parliament of Canada today,” said Mr. Merasty. “I regret to be stepping down at this exciting time of renewal and revitalization for the Liberal Party.”
“That said, family considerations are paramount for me at this point in my life,” he added.
Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion thanked Mr. Merasty for his tremendous contributions to the Liberal Caucus, his constituents and all Canadians.
“During his time as an MP, Mr. Merasty has been an extra-ordinary representative for his constituents in Northern Saskatchewan. His commitment to improving the quality of life for Canadians in Aboriginal and Northern communities is outstanding. He has contributed greatly to raising awareness of the challenges facing these communities and working towards solutions, including through his impassioned defence of the Kelowna Accord,” said Mr. Dion.
Elected in January of 2006, Mr. Merasty served the Liberal Caucus as Associate Critic for Indian Affairs and Special Advisor on Aboriginal Outreach. He also served on several House of Commons committees, including the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food and the Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development. He most recently sat on the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities.
“I have enjoyed working with our Leader Stéphane Dion, and I am confident that his integrity, his passion and his steadfast commitment to Canada will inspire Canadians to choose him as their next Prime Minister,” said Mr. Merasty.
Mr. Merasty also thanked his colleagues in the Liberal caucus:
“In particular, I would like to thank Ralph Goodale for providing an excellent example of service to Saskatchewan.”
Mr. Dion wished Mr. Merasty well in his future endeavors.
“I wish Mr. Merasty and his family all the best in the future. I know that his passionate commitment to public service will lead him to continue to serve the people of northern Saskatchewan, while he pursues new opportunities and spends valued time with his family.”
