'Survivor' Finale Draws 27 Million Viewers

The two-hour "Survivor: Africa" finale wasn't the ratings behemoth its predecessors were, but it still drew an average of almost 27.3 million viewers to CBS Thursday night (Jan. 10).

Airing opposite NBC's Thursday comedy lineup, the U.S. figure skating championships on ABC and two hours' worth of "Family Guy" episodes on FOX, "Survivor: Africa" averaged a 14.7 household rating/22 share, best among the networks for the two-hour period.

The household rating, total number of viewers and 11.3/25 rating among adults 18-49 were the best performances in the "Survivor: Africa's" 13-episode run. The audience for the finale was significantly smaller than for the first two games, which averaged 51.7 million and 36.4 million viewers.

The finale, capped by soccer player Ethan Zohn's victory over retired teacher Kim Johnson, and the one-hour reunion special that followed, gave CBS a 13.3/20 for the night, with an average of 24.5 million viewers and a 10.5/23 among adults 18-49. NBC, on the strength of "Friends" and "ER," scored slightly higher in households (13.9/21) and adults 18-49 (11.0/25), but the Peacock averaged fewer total viewers (21.65 million), probably owing to the fact that many people watched "Survivor" in groups.

/>A new "Friends" featuring a budding relationship between Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) and Joey (Matt LeBlanc) won the 8 to 8:30 timeslot with a 16.1/24 and 25.5 million viewers to "Survivor's" 12.7/19 and 23.2 million. "ER" (16.3/26, 25.4 million viewers) easily beat the Bryant Gumbel-hosted reunion special (10.7/17, 19.05 million).

"Survivor's" audience grew in each half-hour, with nearly 31 million people tuning in between 9:30 and 10 p.m. to see Zohn claim the $1 million prize. CBS viewership in the show's final half-hour was higher than NBC, ABC and FOX combined (28.8 million).
