Description
Architect: H. Craig Severance

Originally the headquarters of the Bank of Manhattan. The Bank of Manhattan later became the Chase Manhattan Bank, which is now part of JP Morgan Chase. It no longer has offices at 40 Wall.

This building was the world's tallest for a brief time in 1930, when it beat the Chrysler Building to completion in a year-long race. Then the Chrysler's builders had an extra-tall spire jacked up above the Bank of Manhattan's flagpole, claiming victory.

On May 20th 1946, a U.S. Coast Guard plane (a small twin engined plane) hit the building at the 58th floor, killing 4. The building was relatively undamaged.

Donald Trump bought the building in 1995. He intended to convert part of it to condos, but the office market became strong again and the space was simply leased out as offices.
