¡®U.S. Voiced Human Rights Concerns to Park¡¯ |
|
|
A declassified U.S. document says that the United States tried to voice concerns over human rights conditions in South Korea to Park Geun-hye, during then U.S. President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosaline Carter¡¯s visit to South Korea in 1979.
At the time, Park served her father, President Park Chung-hee, by standing as the first lady in place of her late mother.
U.S. embassy records showed that ahead of President Carter¡¯s visit, former U.S. Ambassador to Korea William Gleysteen proposed that the first lady talk about human rights issues, nuclear propagation and social welfare.
Gleysteen saw that President Park respected his daughter who gave up starting her own family to focus on assisting him on the government affairs, and that her influence was growing.
The former U.S. ambassador also noted that former U.S. official and woman activist, Esther Peterson, was impressed with Park Geun-hye's brightness and English speaking skills. Reported by KBS WORLD Radio Contact the KBS News: englishweb@kbs.co.kr |
