The map displays the Bay of Plenty region and includes regional and district boundaries, land cover, townships, state highways and major roads. To view the map of the Bay of Plenty region, you must have installed Flash Player 3 or higher.
The map is interactive, allowing you to easily locate townships and other features within the Bay of Plenty region. Layers can be switched on or off, such as regional or district boundaries, exotic and native forests. The ability to zoom in and print sections of the map is also available.
Bay of Plenty region map The controls will function correctly in Netscape Navigator 3 and 4 (LiveConnect and Java-enabled; Windows 95/98/NT/2000 or MacOS) or Internet Explorer 3 and above (ActiveX enabled; Windows 95/98/NT/2000 only). The map is best viewed at a screen resolution of 1024 by 768 or higher.

The prominent features of the region include islands such as Matakana, Mayor (Tuhua) and an active volcano, Whakaari/White Island. Other distinctive landmarks include Mt Maunganui, Mt Tarawera and Putauaki (Mt Edgecumbe), the Tauranga and Ohiwa Harbours and the lakes in the Rotorua district. There are also five other estuaries - the Maketu, Little Waihi, Whakatane, Waiotahi and Waioeka/Otara estuaries. The region extends inland, generally to the ridge of the catchments which drain into the Bay of Plenty. The furthest point from the coast, the top of the Rangitaiki River catchment, is 139 kilometres from the sea. The eight major rivers emptying into the bay are the Wairoa, Kaituna, Tarawera, Rangitaiki, Whakatane, Waioeka, Motu and Raukokore Rivers.
The Taupo Volcanic Zone crosses the region in a line from Lake Taupo to White Island. Two major features of this zone are the extensive geothermal areas and the number of earthquake fault lines which run parallel to the zone.
