Kids and Teens Lauches!

On November 14, 2000, the Open Directory launched the Kids and Teens directory, combining the former Home/Kids and Society/People/Teens areas. While it appears as a top level ODP node, Kids and Teens operates as distinct project within a project. Kids and Teens has its own metas, editalls, guidelines, RDF dump, and community forum. The goal of the Kids and Teens ODP is to be the most comprehensive directory of Web sites targeted at people under the age of 18. Kids and Teens has specific guidelines to ensure the directory provides quality sites that are both safe and friendly for children and teenagers. A unique feature in the Kids and Teen area is an Age Group tag. This allows editors to specify one or more age groups for which a site is intended and can be used by downline data users in their filtering processes. On the ODP side, these age tags appear on the public view, and staff are looking into using these tags as part of the search function.

The Kids and Teens community is being led by seasoned editors Holidayzone, Quiltermom, and Sready who are doing a fantastic job at pulling the kids and teens team together and getting the ball rolling. We are all eternally grateful for their hard work and dedication. If you are interested in becoming part of this new and exciting project and want to help build the most comprehensive under 18 directory of the Web, then we welcome your participation!
