Rector's Presentation

The University of Naples “Federico II” offers a wide range of options to those students who want to embark on a course of academic studies, as well as a number of services to support them in the learning process (see newsletter nr. 2 at http://www.coinor.unina.it/docu/newsletter/Newsletter02.pdf).
Furthermore, the university has seized the opportunities offered by the new information and communication technologies to arrange advanced and easily accessible services. For example, on choosing their course of study, students can test their skills in any disciplinary field through self-assessment tests pertaining to the School they have selected (see <http://www.orientamento.unina.it/ autovalutazione/autotest.html>). In addition, they can benefit from Tutoring and Guidance services made available by the S.O.F.-tel University Centre and enrol online by logging on to the “Federico II” portal (www.unina.it), a service that has been available since last year.

For those students who cannot log on from home or for those who have doubts concerning the service, the university has opened registration offices in several areas of the city, where students can find the necessary documentation, helpful staff and a computer terminal which can be used for online enrolment.

After enrolling, first-year students receive an access code to online university services and an e-mail account, thus being able to benefit from the university digital resources, in particular the online libraries (www.biblio.unina.it) with thousands of online journals.
Students also have access to over 500 computers in the multimedia laboratories, where they can communicate with professors using the Web Professor Service (www.docenti.unina.it).

Students who are about to complete their studies can consult a data bank pertaining to the in-house training opportunities in private companies (see http://service.orientamento.unina.it/ servizi/ORU01/home_page.php), and a high number of post-graduate courses.

A remarkable innovation this year is the opening of the “Federico II International House” that will be collaborating with the Erasmus/Socrates office to promote students’ international mobility (for further information see http://www.relint.unina.it/estero_index.htm)

The “virtual” university is rooted in a reliable and concrete “real” university. The  university’s strength lies, in fact, in the professionalism of about 3,100 highly qualified professors, 87 departments, dozens of research laboratories, broad collaboration networks with foreign universities, research centres, the United Nations and the labour market.
Many entrepreneurs working within the Italian border have been brilliant students of our university and support the learning process through the offer of in-house training in their companies. All these resources are available to students for them to acquire varied and complete professional profiles. Offering high quality instruction and great cultural variety is the main strong point of the University of Naples “Federico II”.

The University of Naples “Federico II” is the biggest university in southern Italy, with a wide and varied course offering. Its 13 Schools (Agriculture, Architecture, Economics, Pharmacy, Law, Engineering, Humanities, Medicine and Surgery, Veterinary Medicine, Biotechnological Sciences, Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences, Political Science and Sociology) offer a choice of 166 degree courses, 44 postgraduate first- and second-level master’s degree courses, 71 specialisation schools, 80 PhD courses and over 38 specialisation degree courses. For a long time the university has been committed to expanding services to students, in order to offer them useful aids in their learning and research activities.

Therefore, the number of IT services has been increased, and today students can use the web to enrol, apply for exams, print out certificates and pay their tuition fees. Over 368 computers are available for students, as well as an International House with an Internet Point, to host and welcome all Erasmus students, and a University Language Centre, where it is possible to refine one’s skills in foreign languages through the use of innovative methodologies and tools. Furthermore, the University has a legacy of over 1,200,000 books and about 18,000 journals that can also be looked up online (www.biblio.unina.it.).

The Guidance and Teledidactics Centre (SOF-Tel), with 13 available desks, one for each School, and a coordination centre located in Via Partenope, gives students vocational guidance to choose the most suitable course. New didactic aids and technical equipment are available for students with special needs, as well as psychological counselling and reception services, reachable online at the following e-mail address:   accoglienza@disabili.unina.it
Visiting the web site www.barriere.unina.it, it is possible to determine the degree of accessibility to the several facilities of the University.
