GreatIsland Generating Station

The Oil fired station at Great Island was opened in 1967. It is located on a 168 acre site in Co Wexford on the north bank of Waterford harbour at the confluence of the rivers Barrow and Suir. Unit 1 and 2 were commissioned in 1967/'68 and when Unit 3 was commissioned in 1972 the station supplied twenty per cent of the electricity needs of the country.

At full output of 240MW's the station burns 1,500 tonnes of oil per day.
