Who?
In 1991, The City of Milwaukee constituted the Bicycle Task Force to develop a bicycle plan for the City of Milwaukee, with the main goal of increasing both commuter and recreational bicycling. In 1993, the Common Council formally recognized the BTF, which is made up of volunteers from the DPW, the Safety Commission and the community. Although the official members are appointed by the Mayor, the task force meetings are open to the public and other interested cyclists attend on such a regular basis, that they have become defacto working members.

What?

Since its inception, the task force has been the driving force behind making Milwaukee more friendly place for cyclists. Here are some of the things it has accomplished through its partnerships with the City forces:

1993 Common Council adopts the BTF's Bicycle Plan for the City of Milwaukee.

1994 Makes secure bike parking, lockers and shower facilities available within the City Hall complex to city employees who commute to work by bicycle.

1995 City streets are evaluated to determine which best accommodated cyclists, and 140 miles of on-street bike routes were designated and signed.

1996 Purchased and installed 36 bike lockers for commuters. The lockers are available to the public on a semi-annual or annual basis through an inexpensive City of Milwaukee DPW permit. Call 414-286-3312 for more information.

1998 Design, print and distribute 70,000 copies of the City Bike Map, complete with safe bicycling information.

2002 Create a bicycle publicity plan to promote bicycle use for transportation rather than single occupancy vehicles. These Milwaukee by Bike information pages were created as part of that project.

2003 The task force officially changed it's name to the Bicycle and Pedestrain Task Force and broadened it's mission statement to include pedestrian issues.

2003 Evaluate existing bike routes and bike lanes and make recommendations for improvements. This GIS-based study resulted in over 145 centerline miles of proposed new bike lanes of which 30 miles will be striped in the Fall of 2004 or the spring of 2005.

2004 The task force looked at the regular city paving plan and made reccomendations that several city streets be striped with bike lanes as part of normal paving projects. These include Center Street, N. 40th St. near Washington Park, and W. Bluemound Ave.

2005 The Task force worked with the Bicycle Federation of WI and Milwaukee PDW staff to produce and distribute the updated bicycle route map Milwaukee by Bike.  That map is now available at all area bike shops, libraries, parks offices and many municipal offices.

The Task Force was happy in 2005 to help open Milwaukee's fabulous new Marsupial Bridge linking the Brady St. area with the Brewers Hill neighborhood across the river.  The Marsupial Bridge hangs under the Holton St. Viaduct and can be accessed via the Commerce St. bike path and N. Water St.

At the east end of Brady St., the Task Force welcomed the 2005 opening of the attractive new County built bicycle and pedestrian bridge over Lincoln Memorial Dr.

In 2005, the task force also worked with Milwaukee DPW staff to stripe 30 miles of streets with bike lanes. The members of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Task Force worked with DPW and the Wisconsin Dept. or Transportation Bureau of Transportation Safety to hold a series of "Walking Workshops" designed to address pedestrian safety issues in neighborhoods and business districts.  The workshops have resulted in a number of safety improvements for pedestrians.  Perhaps the most dramatic are on Brady St., where in-street signs at crosswalks and pedestian curb bump-outs have created a much safer and more pleasant environment for pedestrians.

In 2006 the Task Force worked with DPW to develop the StreetShare pedestrian safety program.  For more information on that program click on the link in the left navigation bar.  Along with launching StreetShare, the task force members worked with the Police Dept. on yield to pedestrian strategic enforcement efforts.

In 2007 the Task Force worked with the Bicycle Federation of WI and DPW staff on an off-street bicycle study to identify future opportunities for trails throughout the area.  The Bicycle Federation also finished a bicycle parking study and installed 700 bike racks around the City.

Ongoing projects:

The City will be updating its bicycle master plan in 2007.  The Bicycle Federation of WI and Alta Planning are the two consultants hired to complete that project.  There will be many community meetings throughout the year.  Watch this website for information about those planning efforts.  Or to become directly involved, email the City Bicycle And Pedestrian Coordinator here.

When and Where?

The full task force meets bi-monthly on the second Monday from 9-11 AM in room 708 of the Frank P. Zeidler Municipal Building at 841 N. Broadway Ave. The dates for the 2008 meetings are Feb. 11th;  April 14th; June 9th; Aug. 11th; Oct. 13th, and Dec. 8th.  The public is welcome to attend. Members of the cycling community and the BPTF meet more informally and as subcommittees more regularly. For the location of the next subcommittee or informal meeting, call 414-286-3144 or email here.
