Dalpe eating up NHL Draft experience

Hockey has been taking Zac Dalpe on quite the ride.

Recently Dalpe was in Toronto for the NHL combine which puts all the top prospects for the 2008 NHL Entry Draft through challenging fitness tests and he believes he survived.

"It's pretty gruelling, but I guess the only person you're kidding is yourself if you're not in shape," said Dalpe. "I thought I did a very good job of getting in shape after the season to get ready for this. You walk into the room and there's probably 200 NHL scouts and they are all looking at you and you do everything with your shirt off so it's kind of intimidating."

However, Dalpe didn't allow himself to be intimidated and didn't match himself against the other prospects. He just went about his business.

According to the TSN website, Dalpe "did very well in the physical testing. He showed good lower body explosion."

He also felt he did exceptional when performing the vertical jumps and the standing long jump.

"On the bike tests, those are pretty tough exercises, but I thought I did pretty well," said the six-foot-one, 175-pound forward.

Dalpe, who played two years of junior B with the Stratford Cullitons before joining the Vees, said the experience was different. He was interviewed by 26 of 30 NHL teams and because he's an NCAA player (committed to Ohio St. for fall of 2008), rules only allow him to be there for 48 hours so the interviews were jam-packed in that time frame.

"I enjoyed the experience and went in with an open mind and had a lot of fun," he added.

While Dalpe is ranked 16th among North American skaters by the NHL Central Scouting and 20th by International Scouting Services as of May 15, he doesn't think about that much.

"It's flattering being ranked 16th, but it's just North American and I'm going to the draft with my family and going with an open mind and not expecting too much, not expecting too little, and kind of soak up the experience," he said. "It's something that every kid should enjoy. What's remarkable about it is that only a select few can."

In speaking to all but four NHL teams, Dalpe said he didn't get a sense of which team would select him, but did say a lot of teams like him.

"It's out of my control now and I've done all I can," he said.

Once he does get drafted, his hockey journey should get a lot more exciting.

It all started when the Paris, Ont., native moved to Penticton for his only season as a Vee in which he made goalies look bad 27 times in 46 games while collecting 63 points during the 2007/08 season.

In early November, Dalpe tallied five goals and seven points in five games while helping lead Team Canada West to a gold medal against Team Canada East. Dalpe was then invited to Vancouver Island for the BCHL all-star game representing the Interior Conference.

Once the regular season was finished, Dalpe scored eight goals and 17 points in 15 games as he helped lead the Vees to their first BCHL championship in 22 years and earned a berth into the Doyle Cup against the Camrose Kodiaks. During the five-game series, Dalpe accumulated two goals and four points in a losing cause.
