Lady Luck smiled on the Winnipeg Fringe Festival this year.

Organizers of the annual theatre event say the 2008 edition broke attendance records.

Paid attendance at the festival, which ended its 11-day run on Sunday, was 72,699, up more than 770 from last year's record, bringing in a total of more than $480,000 this year for performers.

Attendance at the festival's outdoor stage in Old Market Square was also at an all-time high, with a final total of 88,000, up more than 50,000 from last year.

"Despite a few days of rain, the balmy weather during the festival certainly helped to encourage people to visit Old Market Square, the hub of Fringe activity and home of Kids Fringe," executive producer Chuck McEwen said in a release.

More than 140 theatre companies from around the world performed in 22 venues at this year's fringe theatre festival, which had a Viva Las Vegas theme.
