Beatport launches nu disco / indie dance genre page
30 July, 2008 | 10.30AM- Section: Music News Topics: Beatport Blog
Beatport is launching a new landing page, dedicated solely to the genres of “nu disco” and “indie dance”.
Previously lumped together under electronica, these two sub-genres have found distinction in their own right on Beatport.
To differentiate between the two we can go by the following system:
Nu Disco is everything that springs from the late ‘70s and early ‘80s (electronic) disco, boogie, cosmic, Balearic and Italo disco continuum, while Indie Dance, on the other hand, stems from 80’s wave, post-punk, disco punk, leftfield, synth pop, early ‘90s, and elektroclash-pop-trash.
Of the two, one could classify nu disco as smoother and funkier, while indie dance might be described as a bit more aggressive or harsher sounding.
Some example of labels that conform to these genres would be:
4AD
Bang Gang
Domino
Eskimo
2020 Vision
Brique Rouge
Compost
Ed Banger
Kitsune
Lo Recordings
Sunday Best Recordings
Tiger Sushi
In the player below you’ll find a prime example of one of the hot nu disco groups, Hercules & Love Affair.
