A FOOTBALL club's goal of reaching the top tier of Welsh football has moved towards reality today (Wednesday).
Denbighshire County Council's planning committee has given approval to plans by Prestatyn Town Football Club to make the necessary stadium improvements to its Bastion Road home to be able to step up to the Welsh Premier League (WPL).

The club now
has less than two weeks to have the work in place to meet WPL requirements, mainly concerning the installation of floodlights and increasing the seating capacity.

Despite receiving several letters of objection from local residents, mainly on issues including the impact on floodlights, highway safety and accessibility, councillors gave their support to the proposals at the meeting in Ruthin.

In their report to the committee, council officials stated approval should be given only with stringent conditions met.

It says: "The use of the lighting should be limited to no later than 9.15pm for 12 matches per year. Records shall be kept and shall be made available for inspection on request by the local planning authority. During the months of October to March inclusive, the lights shall only be used until 4.45pm once in any 14 day period."

The report also confirms Prestatyn must never exceed the 250 lux lighting limit, the extension to the seating area is not to be covered and the pitch is only to be used by the club.

On the field Prestatyn have qualified for promotion by winning the Cymru Alliance this season but the WPL has confirmed a failure to meet the May 4 stadium deadline would see them refused entry.

A planned temporary ground-sharing deal with Connah's Quay Nomads fell through and the deadline has now passed for any other such agreements to be made.

Prestatyn Town chairman Tony Thackeray has confirmed the club is ready to complete the required work.

Speaking before the meeting, he said if planning permission was granted "we will start work immediately and we have the equipment ready for installing."
