Next captain of the Canucks is Luongo

In a surprise announcement the Canucks have picked Roberto Luongo as their next captain even though it's against NHL rules to allow a goalie to wear the C.

The last NHL goaltender who served as team captain prior to this rule coming into effect was Bill Durnan of the Montreal Canadiens in the 1947–48 NHL season.

The NHL doesn't allow goalies to wear the C because of the on-ice duties, including meeting with officials. The belief is that it takes too long for the goalie to come out of the crease, meet with officials and then return.

Luongo will not wear the C.

Three Canucks will wear A's as assistant captains. They are Mattias Ohlund, Ryan Kesler and Willie Mitchell.

The league rules state you can't wear the "C" on your jersey, but not the mask.  MAKE IT BIG AND BOLD!!!!!

Shows what a joke this franchise really is.  We'll go through it again next year when Luongo gets sick of losing and signs with someone else.

Snowbird Canuck, great idea! We put our graphic artist to work on Luongo's "new mask". Take a look at the follow-up post to see what it would look like.

The defacto on-ice captains are Ohlund, Kessler and Mitchell. The captain in the dressing room is Luongo and in my opinion, that's a great move!

Hey Disgusted! Your comment shows what a joke YOU are! I guess you don't actually watch hockey, spending your time thinking of off handed remarks that waste peoples time. Look fool..the Captain of a team is only important in the room with the team. Thats what they are for, not for arguing with refs or ceremonial puck drops? Get your head out of your a$$ and stop wasting everyones time with your uneducated verbal crap!

M.Gillis & A.V. played it safe.  They didn't want to get the players that the fans wanted as Captain to get their egos bruised.  I personally wanted Mattias Ohlund to be our next Captain, for obvious reasons.  I am supportive of the choice, Roberto being our Captain and I am glad Mattias was given the 'A.'  There is some recognition to Ollie for what he has meant to this team and to us fans and city, but I am wondering if this was M.Gillis' and A.V.s' way of avoiding signing Mattias.  Hmmm?
