The Ocean Surface Topography Mission/Jason-2 satellite was successfully launched by NASA from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on a Delta II launcher at 07:46 UTC.

With a thunderous roar and fiery glow, the Ocean Surface Topography Mission/Jason 2 satellite arced through the blackness of an early central coastal California morning at 07:46 UTC. The Jason-2 satellite climbed into space atop a Delta II rocket. Fifty-five minutes later, Jason 2 separated from the rocket's second stage, and then unfurled its twin sets of solar arrays. Ground controllers successfully acquired the spacecraft's signals. Initial telemetry reports show it to be in excellent health.

The first pass by the satellite over the EUMETSAT's Usingen Earth Terminal is scheduled to take place at 12.46 UTC on 20 June 2008.
