Graphic to display the location of Herefordshire Herefordshire is located just south of the West Midlands – it is sandwiched between the County of Worcestershire to its east with its western border nestling along the breathtaking Brecon Beacons in Wales.

Herefordshire Council came into existence in April 1998, taking over the responsibilities of a number of previous authorities - Leominster District Council, South Herefordshire District Council, Hereford City Council and Hereford-Worcester County Council. It also took over parts of Malvern Hills District Council.

The county’s rolling pastures, rural charm and rustic image belies a host of healthy and vibrant businesses. Numerous diverse communities thrive on their distinct and individual character to give Herefordshire a uniqueness which is valued by residents, visitors and those who work in the county.

Business and commerce need transport and communication links to survive and thrive. These exist, but they’re not obtrusive. Behind the tranquil peace which exudes from every nook and cranny lies the county’s motorway, rail links, and an ever-growing communication infrastructure.

Railway stations at Hereford, Leominster and Ledbury provide regular services to all major cities in the UK – London can be reached in just over three hours by high speed train.

The M5, M50 and nearby M4 provide excellent access to the UK – London is only a two-hour drive away and you can be at Birmingham Airport in about an hour.

Hereford Mini Map

Whether you live or work in Hereford City, or if you are visiting to shop or see the sights, the Hereford mini map (see resources box to the right of the page) is designed to help you find your way around. The best way to get around may not be what you expect. Hereford is a very compact city, with a significant pedestrianised area at its heart, and walking and cycling are often the quickest and easiest ways to get where you want. Additionally, if you walk or cycle around, you will have the chance to see and absorb more of the features and character of our historic city.

To help you gauge distances and times, we have overlaid the map with 10-minute walking and cycling zones. The inner green circle is within 10 minutes steady walk from High Town - the city centre, while the outer purple circle marks 10 minutes steady cycle ride from High Town. The timings are approximate and will vary depending on prevailing conditions but the zones should give you a fair indication of what to expect.

If you need to drive in the City, please take care. Slow down and take account of the needs of pedestrians and cyclists. If you are in a long queue of traffic please don't leave your engine running. Restarting the engine uses less energy than 10 seconds of idling, so you can save yourself some money and give the city a break at the same time. Consider car sharing if you can - register at http://www.twoshare.co.uk/ - remember fewer cars means fewer queues.
