Charges Dropped Against 2 Cops Accused Of Robbery

7 Officers From Now-Disbanded Special Operations Section Were Charged

CHICAGO (STNG) ― All charges have been dropped against two police officers charged in an investigation of the Chicago Police Department's now-disbanded Special Operations Section.

Carl Suchocki, 35, and Tom Sherry, 35, were among seven officers in the unit accused of robbing people.

Some charges against Suchocki were dropped last year, but he'd remained accused in a 2003 home invasion and robbery.

Suchocki, Sherry and two other officers -- alleged ringleader Jerome Finnigan and Keith Herrera -- were accused of stealing nearly $5,000 from a man in 2003.

A source said the charges against Suchocki and Sherry were dropped after victims were unable to place them at the scenes of the crimes.

Finnigan is accused of being the ringleader of a crew of SOS officers charged with abusing their badges to steal from citizens and drug dealers alike.

Finnigan and the other four officers charged are facing state corruption charges. Finnigan later was arrested on federal charges of plotting to kill one of those officers, Herrera, who was cooperating with investigators, sources say.

Supt. Jody Weis said Wednesday morning he did not know whether federal investigators were continuing to look into the officers' conduct.

Nor would Weis comment on what would happen next, including whether he would welcome the officers back.

But Weis did say: "We have guys who have been in purgatory. It's time to fish or cut bait."
