Board of Governors

Our Board of Governors is the executive governing body of London South Bank University and as such is responsible for ensuring the effective management of the University and planning its future development.

It is there to oversee our activities, determine our future direction, foster an environment where we can meet our institutional mission and so maximise the potential of all our students. An additional role is to ensure compliance with the statutes, ordinances and provisions that regulate our institution and its governance framework.

Mr David Longbottom

Non Executive Director, Flybe
Pro Chancellor and Chair of the Board of Governors

David Longbottom is a Non Executive Director of Flybe the largest Regional airline in Europe where he is Chairman of the Remuneration Committee. He is Chairman of the Board of Horton International (UK) part of a search and recruitment consultancy operating in over 20 countries worldwide as well as a Non-Executive Director of the Rose Partnership, a prestigious executive search firm based in the City. He is Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Board of London South Bank University. He was previously Senior Independent Director of Luminar Leisure a leader in entertainment and restaurant venues in the UK.

David retired from the electrical retailer DSG International in 2006 where he held a number of senior roles over a 20 year period latterly as a member of the Group Board and Group Director of Human Resources.

Prior to joining DSGi he held senior positions in Management Development with Lloyds of London, Courtaulds plc and British Gas. Earlier in his career David spent 10 years as an academic in the Business School at Durham University.

David is an Associate Member of the Royal College of Science and a Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Personnel and Development.

Michael Bear BSc, MBA, CEng, MICE

Chief Executive
Spitalfields Development Group

Michael has been the Chief Executive of the Spitalfields Development Group (SDG) since 1991.

A Chartered Civil Engineer with over 28 years experience in the International Construction and Property Development industries. His other roles have included being Managing Director of BICC/Balfour Beatty Developments and a Director at LET plc.

He is Director of a number of regeneration companies and is currently also Governor of the City of London Girls School. In 2003 he was elected to the Court of Common Council of the Corporation of London, representing the Ward of Portsoken. He was appointed Deputy Alderman of the Ward in March 2004.

Ann Chant joined the Civil Service straight after A Levels on what she thought would be a temporary basis while she decided what line to pursue as an alternative to going to University. Forty two years later, she retired as a Civil Servant with an unusually varied career. She worked in four different Government Departments, in various parts of the country, covering a variety of jobs. These ranged from large scale operational responsibilities, through HR and a stint as a Private Secretary.

She was the inaugural Chief Executive of the Contributions Agency from 1991 to 1994 and the Chief Executive of the Child Support Agency from 1994 to 1997. She then did a two year secondment as Managing Director of Business in the Community and undertook two Quinquennial reviews for the Lord Chancellor's department during 1999. She was appointed Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Inland Revenue in January 2000 with responsibility for its service delivery operations. She was the Acting Chairman of the Inland Review during 2004 and then took responsibility for achieving its merger with HM Customs and Excise in 2005.

After retirement in August 2005, she became Deputy Director of Charities for HRH The Prince of Wales, helping his 16 Core Charities achieve the best possible results in the field of Health, the Built Environment, Opportunity and Enterprise, Responsible Business and the Natural Environment. Ann was a Trustee of Citizens Advice between 2000-2007. She has been a Governor of LSBU since 2000.

Ken Dytor FRICS

Ken is a Chartered Surveyor and Managing Director of Regeneration Investments which works for a variety of clients in infrastructure investment and property development focusing particularly on the health and education regeneration sectors.

He was previously the Deputy Crown Estate Surveyor at the Crown Estate Commissioners and Development Director at British Land. In 1998 he founded Urban Catalyst, a groundbreaking development company delivering mixed use regeneration projects which were all sold in 2006.

Ken is a member of the Executive Board of the Central London Partnership, the London Advisory Committee of English Heritage, and an adviser to the Government on regeneration and sustainability. He also chairs Rivington Place, which is delivering the first permanent home for culturally diverse visual arts and photography. He is a non – executive director of Tilfen Land. In addition he is the British Property Federation Visiting Fellow at Reading University. He is a former President of the British Council for Offices.

Ken is a former part-time student at LSBU and is a former external examiner at LSBU and de Montfort Universities.

Principal & Chief Executive of Southwark College

Dorothy Jones has been Principal & Chief Executive of Southwark College in London since 1996. She has worked in four other London colleges (Westminster, Hackney, Kingsway and the College of North East London). She is also

  • Member of UFI/FE Liaison Group
  • Member of the London Civic Forum

Dorothy is committed to ensuring that education and training enable Londoners to improve their careers and lives, thereby benefiting London as a whole. She values working with young people and adults from disadvantaged communities and enabling them to succeed in their learning. She was born in London and has lived, worked and brought up her family in the inner city.

Michael Mitchell MA (Hons)

Michael has lived in Southwark for 25 years and served on the local council for 4 years at the end of the 1980s. He has worked with a number of youth groups in Camberwell for many years.

Having qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Touche Ross, Michael moved into the commercial world, first as Financial Controller of British Urban Development Ltd., a company created to regenerate Britain's Inner Cities in the late 1980's and then Storehouse, the retail chain.

For the following 10 years he was Finance Director of WH Everett & Son Ltd, a distributor of academic books to libraries all over the world. The business was recently sold.

Anne Montgomery

Self-employed Management Consultant and Southwark resident

Anne Montgomery is a self employed Management consultant working mainly with large corporate organisations supporting HR and other Business Change programmes. She specialises in the area of Workforce Management, particularly in the visioning and designing of future business operations supported by technology.

She previously worked primarily in the retail sector as an employee of Marks and Spencer plc and most recently Sainsbury plc. She has held a range of senior managerial positions in both commercial and HR management and during her career has worked extensively in the UK, Ireland, Central and Eastern Europe.

Anne holds a BSc in Physiology from St Andrews University, is a graduate of Common Purpose and a qualified Project and Programme Manager. She has lived locally in Southwark for 12 years and has a keen interest in supporting the local community.

Revd Dame Sarah Mullally

Rector of the Sutton Team Ministry in the Church of England (diocese of Southwark)

Sarah Mullally is Rector for the Sutton Team Ministry (Church of England), having previously been Assistant Curate of a parish in Battersea since October 2004, when she left her position as Chief Nursing Officer in the Department of Health. Sarah was the youngest Chief Nursing Officer ever appointed in November 1999 and as the Government’s most senior nursing adviser she had responsibility for delivering the Government’s strategy for nursing and midwifery and led over 420,000 nurses, midwives and health visitors. During her time as Chief Nursing Officer Sarah oversaw the return of the Matron, a substantial increase in the numbers of nurses and midwives in the NHS and an increase in the opportunities for users to be involved in healthcare.

Sarah started her nursing career at the South Bank Polytechnic in 1980 and became a Registered General Nurse with a BSc (Hons) in Nursing Studies. She returned again to the South Bank in 1990 and obtained an MSc in Interprofessional Health and Welfare Studies including a distinction in research. She is an Honorary Fellow of LSBU and was awarded honorary Doctorates by Bournemouth University in November 2001, by Wolverhampton University in 2004 and the University of Hertfordshire in November 2005. In 2006 she was made an Honorary Fellow of Canterbury Christ Church University and obtained the MA degree in Pastoral Theology from Heythrop College (University of London).

Sarah Mullally is married to Eamonn and has two children, Grace and Liam . She became a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2005 in recognition of her contribution to nursing and midwifery.

Diana Parker

Diana read law at Cambridge University and took a Master's Degree in Criminology there. She then qualified as a solicitor and has spent her professional career at Withers. Her own area of expertise is in Family Law and she is one of the leading practitioners in her field.

Diana was for 8 years until July 2007, Chairman of Withers which is now an international partnership with offices in New York, Connecticut, Milan, Geneva and London. During her Chairmanship the Firm became a limited liability partnership (LLP), merged with a smaller US practice and more than doubled in size and turnover.

From July 2007 Diana stepped down as the Firm’s Chairman in order to concentrate on her work as a legal practitioner and to extend her involvement in the voluntary sector. In addition to being a Governor of LSBU, she is a Trustee of the Institute for Philanthropy, a Trustee of Common Purpose and has an active role as "Spouse of House", her husband being Principal of Hertford College, Oxford.

Hitesh Tailor BA (Hons), FCA

Company Director and South Bank alumnus

Hitesh Tailor was born in Kenya in 1957.

He studied Business Studies at South Bank Polytechnic and graduated with a First Class Honours degree. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants having qualified with one of the large international firms including a spell in international tax.

His career in industry started with the oil boom, travelling to Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Over the last 18 years he has had varied commercial experience including acting as the Chief Executive of a private investment group that has interests in Brussels, Montreal and London.

He has a keen interest in Management, winning an Institute of Management prize for best essay on the qualities required by business leaders of tomorrow. He is a keen supporter of the London South Bank University, establishing in 1998 an annual prize for the best graduating Business Studies student of the year.

Hitesh is a member of the Reform Club and the Anti-Slavery Organisation, and a past member of the Royal Society of Asian Affairs.

His outside interests include mentoring, visiting National Trust properties, keeping fit, languages and jazz. Since 1999, Hitesh has served on the Audit Committee and was appointed an Independent Governor in 2001. In 2005 he became Chair of the Audit Committee. He also serves on the Committee for Student Affairs and the Nominations Committee.

Denise Bagley

Principal Lecturer, Programme Director - Human Resources and Management

Denise is a Principal Lecturer in the Faculty of Business, Computing and Information Management (BCIM). She is a Programme Director in the Department of Human Resources and Management.

Denise is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and is active in CIPD affairs. She represents LSBU on the South London CIPD Branch Executive and is a member of CIPD's Quality Management Panel.

Denise was appointed to the Board of Governors by the Academic Board in December 2006.

Jim Snaith

Head of Department of Business & International Studies

Jim is head of the Department of Business and International Studies in the Faculty of Business, Computing and Information Management (BCIM).

Jim has published papers in journals and conference proceedings on distance learning, the impact of the internet, IT competence and quality issues. He is an external examiner to London Metropolitan University and Paisley University.

Jim was appointed to the Board of Governors by the Academic Board in December 2006.

Helen George

Head of Learning and Teaching Enhancement Unit

Helen George was elected as academic staff representative on the Board of Governors in 2004. She joined LSBU in 1991 having gained significant management experience in industry and then studied as a full-time mature student.

Helen's current role is Head of the Learning & Teaching Enhancement Unit whose remit includes leading on the implementation of a range of developments, including e-learning and employability, as well as co-ordinating and supporting other policy and curriculum initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of academic practice and the student learning experience. She has extensive experience of serving on university committees and chairing validation panels. She is a member of several national networks concerned with academic and professional development including the planning team for the HEA's Change Academy initiative.

Prior to taking up this central role Helen was leading on learning and teaching in BCIM where she was a member of the HRM and Management Department teaching Organisational Behaviour. Her particular areas of interest are Career Development, Employability and Change Management. Helen continues to teach in BCIM each semester, believing this provides credibility with peers and helps her to understand the changing organisational landscape.

Alan Lee

Document Services Manager - CLSD

Alan provides and advises on reprographics, digitisation and the management of copyright services across LSBU. He worked for over 10 years in the commercial printing, publishing and media industries, before becoming a full-time mature student at the London College of Communication (LCC), where he later taught City & Guilds, business studies and the British Printing Industries Federation courses.

He is an accredited advisor to the LCC and joined the South Bank Polytechnic in 1987, obtaining a South Bank Diploma in Management Studies and a Graduateship of the City & Guilds Institute for his work on the design of the corporate image of South Bank Polytechnic and its transition to a University.

In 1992, at the age of 40, he discovered his dyslexia. This helped him understand how the mind works and the value of multi-sensory teaching and learning and how technology and design can help, support and enhance the learning processes. Alan has a keen interest in post-polio and dyslexia research, sustainability, document content records management, virtual learning environments, smartcard technology and management information systems. Hobbies include horticulture, music and multi-media production.

Nordin Jahar

President of the Students' Union

Nordin Jahar is the President of the Students’ Union. He came to the UK (London) as a student in 2004 from a University called InHolland situated in The Netherlands, to study at the London South Bank University. He has finished his undergraduate course in Business Studies and has future plans to study his Masters at LSBU.

As a student he was very active in organising events and activities. In his first year he played for the LSBU football team and received two cups for the best player and captain of the year. In his second year he was a course board rep for his course, business studies. He organises a 5-a-side football tournament every year. He took a gap year to do his placement at the Hilton Hotel on Park Lane in 2006-2007 and returned to do his final year in 2007-2008. Once graduated, he became the President of the Students’ Union for the year 2008-2009 and has been re-elected for the year 2009-2010.

He represents 23,500 students and has put all his time and energy in to his job to make sure that all students receive the best student experience at London South Bank University and UK. He attends a lot of committee meetings at the University with the Senior Management Team on (Equality & Diversity Committee, Committee for Student affairs and many more). He is also active outside the University with other organisations such as NUS, Business, Human Rights organisation, Muslim Council, MPs and many more.

His outside interests include boxing, football, and fitness. Since 2004, he has worked as an adviser to a lot of communities and organizations, and gives them support.

Nordin is committed to ensuring that the communities around improve and develop themselves. He loves working with young people and adults from different backgrounds and religions and enabling them to succeed in their lives. Nordin was born in Asmara (Eritrea) and has lived, worked and grown up in Holland in a village called Reeuwijk next to the city of Rotterdam. He is a practising Muslim and a role model to a lot of young people from different backgrounds and religions.
