BioPortal 2.1
BioPortal is an open repository of biomedical ontologies. Researchers in biomedical informatics can submit their ontologies to BioPortal, and others can access these ontologies in their web browsers through the BioPortal user interface, or through web services.
The following are the key features of BioPortal:
- Multiple ontology navigation and browsing
- Ontology search, including search in multiple ontologies and "search all"
- Ability to add marginal notes to classes in BioPortal ontologies, a feature that enables the community to comment on ontologies and discuss their contents
- Ability to create point to point mappings between concepts in different BioPortal ontologies
- Ontology peer-review, which enables users to describe projects for which they use BioPortal ontologies, and rate and review ontologies according to several dimensions
- Access to Open Biomedical Resources (OBR), a component that automatically indexes important biomedical data sets available online (e.g., entries in PubMed, GEO, ClinicalTrials.gov) on the basis of metadata annotations, and links the underlying data sets to the terms in ontologies in BioPortal
- Support for ontologies in multiple formats (OWL, OBO, Protege, LexGrid)
- Access to BioPortal contents and capabilities through REST services, enabling developers to integrate BioPortal functionality in their applications
- Full ontology navigation using Flash visualization
See the Release Notes for information on specific features.
