Introducing Museums Sheffield
Trying something new can be a little bit scary, but what a great feeling when you make the connection. We’re trying new things all the time and we want you to try them too, so come with us and we’ll help connect you with art, nature, history, ideas - and each other.

You can connect with us in lots of ways. Through our four museums, through our events and exhibitions, when we’re out and about and right here on our website.

Background

Museums Sheffield is the trading name of Sheffield Galleries & Museums Trust. We are a team of 140 lead by Chief Executive, Nick Dodd and a board of Trustees chaired by Sandra Newton.

We were created in April 1998 to take over the management of four museums in Sheffield from the City Council. The organisation is an independent trust funded by Sheffield City Council, Museums Libraries and Archives Council and Arts Council England.

We are a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee.

Connections

Partnership working with regional and national organisations forms a key component in the work of the Museums Sheffield. The V&A have been a formal partner since 1999 and helped us develop the original plans for the Millennium Gallery. This partnership plays an important part in the learning and exhibition programmes as well as allowing both organisations to learn from each other and share museum skills and experience at all levels. Museums Sheffield also works closely with Tate and the National Portrait Gallery allowing us to develop ideas around learning and interpretation.

At a Regional level we lead the partnership known as the Yorkshire HUB which received money directly from central government to invest in regional museums through the Museums Libraries and Archives Council funding programme - Renaissance.
