The Organization of American States on Sunday condemned Sunday's military coup in Honduras and demanded the immediate and unconditional return of exiled President Manuel Zelaya.
The OAS also said that it would not recognize any government arising from the coup.
The OAS Permanent Council met in special session to consider the situation in Honduras hours after Zelaya was overthrown by the Honduran Army.
The council passed a resolution "to condemn vehemently the coup d'etat staged this morning against the constitutionally-established government of Honduras."
The resolution condemned "the arbitrary detention and expulsion from the country of the constitutional president." It also demanded the "immediate, safe and unconditional return" of Zelaya, who was taken by troops from his home and whisked away by plane to Costa Rica.
OAS Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza was en route to to Nicaragua for consultations with other regional leaders, the the organization said in a statement.
The OAS General Assembly was scheduled to meet on Tuesday in a special session at its Washington headquarters to discuss the upheaval in Honduras.
