Ionia Avenue Restoration

TE award: $555,164
Other funds: $1,809,836
Total cost: $2,356,000

In the early 1900s, many of the streets in Grand Rapids, MI were paved in brick. The surviving brick streets are attractive and durable, but with over 625 miles of city streets, the cost of maintenance is high. Today, 20 segments of brick remain, primarily located on Ionia Avenue in the Heartside Historic District.

Multi-phased TE awards have enabled the City of Grand Rapids to restore four streets and two additional blocks to their original appearance.

The Enhancements project has also encouraged over $30 million in private redevelopment and preservation in the surrounding mixed-use urban district. The Ionia Avenue brick restoration project has allowed Grand Rapids to preserve its past while providing for the future.
