WHO WE ARE

Welcome to the homepage of Leipzig Zeitgeist, Leipzig’s International Voice. We are Leipzig’s bi-monthly English magazine that entertains and informs you about life in Leipzig – its people, places and happenings – all from an international perspective. We do this through themed issues and regular series like our Surviving in Leipzig and Language Corner features, Spinnerei Stories (tales from Leipzig’s biggest creative community), an International Personality feature, plus our Buildings of Leipzig and Street Signs series.
Chief Editors Christina Nielsen-Marsh from Wales and New Zealander Kim Rupp-Gregory work with a talented and dedicated team to produce each issue. We hope that Leipzig Zeitgeist will enrich your life – as it does ours.

Here you will find highlights of stories that feature in our current issue.
Issue 12, Sep/Oct 09 revolves around Leipzig’s Peaceful Revolution, and the celebrations and reflections of this event 20 years on.

LET THERE BE LIGHT!

Leipzig’s Festival of Lights 2009
On 9 October it will be all about emotion in Leipzig – rekindling the emotion of a burning desire for democracy bravely sought 20 years ago, and making this once again visible through light. As darkness descends the city will be aglow.
20 years after the highpoint of Leipzig’s peaceful revolution, light, audio, and video will be used to interpret what drove 70,000 people to take to Leipzig’s streets on 9 October 1989, and to celebrate what they achieved.

WITNESSES TO HISTORY: LEIPZIG – 9 OCTOBER, ’89

The events that came to a head on the streets of Leipzig on October 9, 1989 marked the beginning of a new era for a unified Germany. We asked some past and current Leipzigers to reflect on life in the GDR and the events of the 9 October. Such first-hand accounts truly keep Leipzig’s Zeitgeist, its ‘spirit of the times’, alive.

STREET SIGNS:
THE PEACEFUL REVOLUTION TOUR

This issue we have something a little different for our Street Signs series. Instead of looking at one street name, we have decided to bring you a series of streets that together make up one of Leipzig’s newest city tours. Keeping very much with the theme of this issue – we bring you the Peaceful Revolution Tour.
