bracket.gif (21065 bytes)The Italianate house has two or three stories; a low pitched roof, tall narrow windows that are L or  U shaped. These are compound-plan houses usually shaped without towers. cupola.gif (16373 bytes)The stories of a house are if you have stairs that go up and up. Those stairs will lead to bedrooms. A cornice is outside of your large brackets or dormer. Rumuntic is romantic looking.

 

dentils.gif (13732 bytes)The Italian towns and cites competed to build the most imposing bell tower or campanile.The Italiante houses were popular in the 1830s through the 1880s.

 

eaves.gif (11408 bytes)Perhaps because these houses are often surrounded by huge trees or because their locations silhouette them against the sky they have gained a haunted look . But high ceilings,windows that sometimes extend to the floor,and decorations actually make the Italianates cheerful places to live and wonderful houses for children to grow up in. The first Italianate houses in the United States were built in the late 1830s ; the style was popularized by the influential patterns of Andrew Jackson .
