Getting in and out of financial difficulties
If you do get into financial difficulties, you will not be alone, and schools are very used to this. Their attitude to bill-paying and money varies hugely.
The best schools are wonderful and increasingly flexible over payment, allowing arrangements such as monthly installments. Bursars are expecting this request – no shame attached.
Indeed the bursar has changed from the enemy to being the father confessor (with some notable exceptions – best description received: ‘the bursar is a most evil toad’).

Want an independent school education but can’t afford the fees?
Don't get your hopes up. It is possible to get help with school fees in some circumstances, but funds are not overflowing and we would never profess that help is easily come by.
It takes determination and hard work on your part, and exceptional abilities on the part of your child, to have a good chance of securing a high-value bursary.
Most scholarships are, these days, of little value - a few per cent off the fees for the sake of an accolade. Things may improve in the years to come, following rulings from The Charities Commission, an increasing number of schools are proposing to allocate more funds in future years to those who would otherwise be unable to fund the fees. Money matters
Finally some good news, although the hoped for 'freeze on fees' didn't materialise, 2009/10 fee increases at independent schools, which have risen well ahead of inflation in recent years, have on the whole been kept to a minimum. As the economic down-turn puts additional pressure on pockets so the hunt for bargains intensifies
