A Point of Personal Privilege

| | Comments (49)

For those who might be interested - and you have every reason not to be - I am no longer with MSNBC. Three months short of my current contract I sent the following to the boss, Phil Griffin:  "Phil, Just wanted to give you the heads up that my situation with MSNBC has become so unrewarding for me that I've decided to move on. -- Craig"

  1. You may be too clear headed to appear on any of these clown-fests.

  6. Can't tell ya how hard this choice was to make. I've had a difficult time with MSNBC since the presidential primaries, should have pulled the trigger long ago. but my scotch-irish blood keeps me loyal long past the bitter end, which has long past, sadly.

  7. See, there's this fish camp, and ...

until then, see ya more on Imus. BTW, Fred Imus is pretty good and funny on his radio show with Buckskin and Missy.

  11. Just saw your last post, Craig. Well, you know how we all felt re msnbc during the primaries, and I'm just now getting to be able to watch ko for more than 5 minutes.
Now Tweety has a section at the end called Let Me Finish, which I find hilarious since that must be what his guests think when he keeps interrupting. I hope you'll be on more than Imus as I'm not a morning person. Congratulations on taking a step forward for yourself, Craig!

By the way, I have Phil on my email address book since I wrote so many emails during the primaries.

  14. The buzzards are circling around Gov. Paterson...how long can he last? 24 hours? 48?

The consensus is that Rangel is not just temporarily gone, he's done with Ways and Means and tax law writing, but he's a shoo-in for re-election.

It would be nice to see you in the op-ed page a couple times a week at WaPo, but I don't suppose they are hiring either.

Posted by: DexterJohnson Author Profile Page | March 5, 2010 2:46 AM

  15. I didn't know he said that, but I've heard him make other assignments of people he's had on. It's breath-taking the nerve the man has, and toward you - we've all gravitated to you because you are NOT racist or mean-spirited. I remember listening to you all these years and trying to figure out whether you were liberal or conservative, and never could, so I finally gave up and decided the things you did say warranted my attention since they weren't partisan. You really are a hero. I'm very happy for you.

  16. Mark Twain just called and left this to post here:

"That work I have done I have done because it has been play. If it had been work I shouldn't have done it.

Who was it who said, "Blessed is the man who has found his work"? Whoever it was he had the right idea in his mind. Mark you, he says his work--not somebody else's work. The work that is really a man's own work is play and not work at all. Cursed is the man who has found some other man's work and cannot lose it. When we talk about the great workers of the world we really mean the great players of the world. The fellows who groan and sweat under the weary load of toil that they bear never can hope to do anything great. How can they when their souls are in a ferment of revolt against the employment of their hands and brains? The product of slavery, intellectual or physical, can never be great."

  25. Too true -- MSNBC has become cartoonish. They were awful during the primaries, and IMO they have just become worse. Olberman and Matthews are unjustifiably smug. The morning show is barely stomach-able because of people like Donnie Deutch...Rachel Maddow has been transformed into a lipstick lesbian prone to schoolmarmish affectations. And even when people aren't shouting, they seem to be.

Where that channel lost its bearing is in misunderstanding the market. The reason Fox has such big ratings is that the right loves the drumbeat style. True liberals shop around for information and don't need lectures and soundbites.

Posted by: patd Author Profile Page | March 5, 2010 6:31 AM

  31. Craig,

As much as I enjoy your input on the issues, you are asking alot from us (most I believe) to sit and listen to the bullshit being tranmitted from the FOX channels. It's not news or useful information, but it is somewhat entertaining, I guess.

Hannity, OReilly, Beck; all of them for that matter, are so narrow minded that they really only ever needed one eye.

But, and only because of the shear enjoyment you provided while viewing your witty commentary, I am willing to take two asprin 20 minutes before your scheduled appearance so I can stomach those times when its not you speaking.

I wish you great success on your journey through the place where you stick the enema, and I have a spare pair of chest waders that you are welcome to. I suggest you put them on before anyone there begins to speak; else you will be covered in it.

    Your friend,

  32. Craig,

My first concern was for you and me; then anger bubbled it's way to the surface toward MSNBC for not doing whatever they had to; to make you comfortable there and persuade you to stay. Where is their loyalty to you, and their concern for providing what their viewers want.

Around twenty years ago, there was an interesting article in the Readers Digest; it was titled "What you Learn After you Know it All". What a pitty that, apparently, the management at MSNBC never read it; shame on them.

  34. Wow. You leave MSNBC because you complain they are too "left" and go to FOX to announce it? The 24 Hour GOP propaganda network? Sorry, it just doesn't wash. You must be a die hard republican at heart, becuase only the far right thinks fox news. Republicans even admit it's "their" network. Don't let the door hit you on the way out. Never like you anyway.

Posted by: DjS Author Profile Page | March 5, 2010 9:50 AM

  35. I wish you all good things but announcing your decision to leave MSNBC because it tilts too left by appearing on FOX , the mouthpiece of the Republican party, kinda undermines your argument....not too mention simple logic.

  38. Craig, I long ago lost the stomach for MSNBC. So, I rarely would see you there.

As you say, though - "better late than never" and congrats on making the move away! Wherever you land, it has to be a superior spot.

Those casting aspersions at Fox should give it another chance. Not every nightly cable show is identical. Their news shows are better than many.

  39. All the man ever did was giggle on MSNBC. I never knew what he was trying to say.

All you guys over at Fox, he coming your way. I hope he makes it there. He'll have to practice on his lying though.

  40. What a hack, how disingenuous!!

YOU-- go to FAUX NEWS.. what for----- FAIR AND BALANCE??

How do you expect anyone to believe a word that you just wrote????
    Laughable!!! You have NO INTEGRITY!!!
Anyway, I always thought that you were right wing, fronting as bi-partisan. I'm NOT surprised at all!!

Good riddance, never liked your commentary to begin with for it seemed ...off. I will NOT miss you at all!!

    You and Dana Milbank..

  41. Craig...I had to turn off Mojo today as I cannot tolerate the crap they brew-up! I watched CNN to get some great information on underemployment. MSNBC is so yesterday, anyway. It will be a pleasure NOT to watch.

Another job lost. And you were certainly underemployed at MSNBC.

Posted by: Blonde wino Author Profile Page | March 5, 2010 3:45 PM

  42. Craig, sorry but if you do go on Fox News (which you curiously deleted from this post) then you are a total hypocrite.

Joe Scarborough is not some "lefty" and neither is much of the daytime programming at MSNBC yet you accuse them all of being "lefty". Rachel Maddow is one of the best journalists out there today and unlike others she does her research. That you dismiss her work as "lefty" is an insult to true journalists.

I certainly won't miss you if you think talking about the truth, which most of the media is not doing, is a bad thing or "lefty".

    Get over yourself, Craig.

Posted by: Sweetynyc Author Profile Page | March 5, 2010 4:37 PM

  43. Name, honesty, objectivity, neutrality, thoroughness, truth, journalistic principles (whatever they are), etc. are compromised when associating with the business controlled news media. MSNBC=ABC=NBC=CBS=FOX. Join them and "guilty by association" is no longer a cliche.

It was disappointing to read that Craig was going on Fox. Fox!!?? Fox's greatest accomplishment is having corrupted the thoroughly corrupted American news gathering industry. Fox is disgusting!

Posted by: LeoNYC Author Profile Page | March 5, 2010 8:00 PM

  44. I have always enjoyed watching you on MSNBC. I still like watching the different programs on MSNBC and will miss you. I am having a hard time watching Morning Joe because they are always looking for the negative. I will never watch FOX and hope that is just a rumor that you are going there. I hope you will update us to where we can view your commentary. I did not think you were a clown...I thought sometimes you were making fun of yourself. I did not the comment about you being called a racist. I think your work with Haiti is wonderful! Please keep us posted!

Posted by: Jeannie Seifarth Author Profile Page | March 6, 2010 8:14 AM

  45. Jeannie Seifarth, did you mean to admit to having a closed mind? On the other hand, that makes you a member in good standing of the official left.

    Posted by: Banjo1 Author Profile Page | March 6, 2010 8:31 AM

  46. Banjo....at least I have my real name...no I do not have a closed mind just not brain washed by the right wing meanies!

Posted by: Jeannie Seifarth Author Profile Page | March 6, 2010 8:42 AM

  47. Sorry that you are moving on, always enjoyed your comments, but have not seen you recently on MSNBC.
I will watch for you where ever you land.
MSNBC ceased to be a news organization during
the 2008 primaries when they all but declared war
on Hillary Clinton. Now it appears that they only exist to act as apologists for the ineptitude of the Obama administration. You are well rid of them.
    Best of luck to you.

Posted by: jace Author Profile Page | March 6, 2010 9:57 AM

  48. Craig:

Does this mean that you will appear on Imus more frequently now, since apparently, MSNBC prohibits its analysts from going on his show? I hope so. You were one of the rare few among Imus' guests who had the guts to stand up for him. The others caved and cowered in hypocritical self-righteous indignation to the pressure of the race hustler Sharpton.

I also remember that incident with the Clintons and completely agreed with your defense of them. Although I voted for Obama by default (supported Hillary), I believe his campaign definitely played the race card, and you rightly called them on it. You were the only analyst who did not drink the kool-aid and joined the mass hysteria against the Clintons. But I don't recall the situation in which Matthews called you a racist. I assume that was because you defended the Clintons against those who had accused them of being racist?

Always enjoy your objective analysis and humor, and hope to hear you on Imus and elsewhere.

  49. Hey, I'm a former liberal democrat (now an independent) who stopped watching MSNBC for the same reason, it became an insult to my intelligence. Craig Crawford is to be applauded for being a breath of fresh air who refused to debase himself by remaining with that farce of a news network.
