Hawkins guarantees himself the lead ahead of tonight's session as a run of 64 takes him 5-3 ahead. Hawkins has regained the lead. Another solid break from the Londoner. This match is a severe examination for the defending champion Now the match is level, as Higgins pops in a couple of small breaks. Higgins produces his best break of the match so far, 61, to close to only 3-2 down. And the Hawks has flown into a 3-1 interval lead now. Hawkins flies through the third with a cracking 69 break. It's quite a slow start to this match. A lot of safety exchanges and no fireworks yet. Hawkins levels the match, that will help settle the Londoner's nerves. John Higgins wins a rather protracted first frame to get his defence under way. Eirian Williams is the referee for this match which tells us that the Welshman will ref this year's final. It's traditional for the final referee to officiate the opening match of the Championship. John Higgins chose Paolo Nutini, Pencil full of Lead as his walk on, while Barry Hawkins assisted by musical director Michael Holt selected Blur, Song 2. I can exclusively reveal that Holty and Barry took over my laptop yesterday to trawl You Tube for the best tunes. Notes: Higgins wraps up the match. He looked there for the taking this morning, but came out very strong tonight and once he'd levelled the match there really only looked like being one winner. It was a brief respite for Hawkins as Higgins powers in a century to move within a frame of the winning line. Hawkins has stopped the Higgins charge. But is it too little, too late? It looks rather ominous now for Hawkins fans. John Higgins is beginning to boss the procedings and looking in far better form than he did this morning. Higgins has hit top gear now, a fabulous 121 there to hit the front. Higgins takes the first of the evening to level scores. Can The Champion push on from here? |
