After 39 days since the MBC labor union went on strike to get their MBC president Kim Jae Chul to step down from his position, the former has temporarily called a halt to their strike and have voted to return to work from the 14th.
The labor union had went on strike in early April as they felt that their president, Kim Jae Chul who has only been appointed in February of this year was interfering with the neutrality of the station and was a puppet of the Lee Myung Bak administration.
The strike left many of the station’s programs in limbo as they couldn’t air new episodes because of the lack of manpower. The livelihoods of many workers were also severely affected by this because of a loss in income.
There was some respite though after members of the labor union voted on the 13th to temporarily halt the strike and return to work from the 14th.
But with the 14th being a Friday, it’s unlikely that the weekend variety programs like We Got Married, Infinity Challenge and Sunday Sunday Night will be able to air new episodes because of the timing. Special re-runs are being planned again for them this weekend but things should return to normal from next week.
Let’s hope that this saga gets resolved soon in a amicable manner because this is like just keeping a lid on things bubbling underneath.

My own selfish reasons for wanting the strike to end aside, I hope this doesn’t happen again. While I support standing up to injustice within the workplace, I don’t really like it when it affects innocent people’s livelihoods. It’s fast approaching two months on this, and I know some wallets are being stretched, and companies don’t care what the reason is for you delaying bill payment two months in a row.

these are indeed critical issues probably much more complicated than we can imagine……
I am actually just glad that with the downturn in the economy, these people can return to their jobs and be able to support their families once again. They do a very important job providing hours of entertainment to a wide variety of audience and they should be recognized for that. So stop talking about how badly you wanna see your favorite idols circle jerking each other off. It’s really selfish and disrespectful. It’s a lot more complicated deal and people’s livelihoods are on the line.

If it was still going on then I guess the newly appointed president wasn’t doing anything to help the cause.
He could have stepped down willingly. I mean that was always an option.
39 Days…. It makes me wonder what the guy was doing the whole time if this lasted so long.
I don’t blame the MBC workers. If I was a worker there I would have went on strike too. I don’t want a show that I’m taking part in to be formed on how this one group looks at things.

This was kind of surprising to me, because from what I knew, MBC is the very liberal station that’s usually anti-conservative, while KBS is the station that supports the Lee administration. MBC even had the major problem a few years ago when they aired a documentary that falsely used research data and completely misused interview segments to frame President Lee into making him look like he was doing something horrid by allowing American beef to be imported into Korea…
So, this kind of took me by surprise…

Well at least the strike’s suspended for now… I have to say I do miss those shows, but the agony it gave me isn’t as much as compared to the writer’s strike in America a couple years ago. And anyways I sort of do respect their reasons for going on the union strike… because the neutrality of the station’s POV is quite important. But I think the fact that these political stuff has affected variety programs that are not political in nature is quite unfortunate.

Well, I love variety shows, especially WGM and Infinity challenge, but I really hope they continue the strike until they regain neutrality. So, as sad as I am to say I will proudly support the strike as long as possible for MBC to change. Their pause is probably due pure necessity of money to support themselves. anyways, gogostrike.
