Ducks to wear third jerseys in 2010-11

June 11th, 2010, 12:20 pm · 11 Comments · posted by Curtis Zupke, Staff writer

The Ducks will be sporting new feathers next season.

The Ducks changed their name and look in 2006.

The organization will introduce third jerseys during the 2010-11 season, Bob Wagner, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, confirmed Friday.

The jersey design has been completed, Wagner said, but the club won’t unveil it until during the season. It will be worn for home games a maximum 15 times as mandated by the NHL.

Wagner said the timing was right after the organization’s re-branding a few years back.

The club changed in June of 2006 from its eggplant-jade-and-white colored uniforms worn under Disney ownership to its current black-metallic-gold design unveiled under new owners Henry and Susan Samueli (the organization also dropped “Mighty” from its name).

“We had to respect the initial plan,” Wagner said. “For us to launch a third jersey really quick would dilute the original jersey. We felt we needed to establish the current logo and colors … it’s not like we felt that we should do one just to do a jersey.”

Wagner also acknowledged that there was a marketing plan involved with introducing a third jersey. Most, if not all, NHL teams have implemented third jerseys with the intent of selling more merchandise.

“Is it important to sell a lot of third jerseys? Absolutely,” Wagner said. “But I don’t want it to take away from our core product.”

General manager Bob Murray, coach Randy Carlyle, president and CEO Tim Ryan and Wagner were involved in the new design. Ducks players were also consulted, which was a major source of input.

“They’re the most excited about it, which makes me feel we’ve completed ‘mission accomplished,’ ” Wagner said. “I’ve gotten a lot of positives.”

The former Mighty Ducks did have third jerseys in the mid-1990s and early 2000s, including a much criticized cartoonlike one featuring the Wild Wing mascot waving a goalie stick (right).

Wagner could not reveal any details about the new look but he was confident it will be received well.

Said Wagner, “I think the fans will really embrace it based on the fact that there is meaning to it.”

C’mon man, give us a clue, Orange, finally some shoulder crests?, what? You can’t leave us hanging…start a rumor… anything, it would have meaning? Historic meaning? tell us there is no purple or teal on it…

    • ClippinWings says:

Ducks have never worn teal, so I don’t think the will start now.

Yeah, yeah I know. But technically it was “Jade” :)

  • Eating Fool says:

Lace up? Alternate colors or what? How much should I save up for one?

  • duckgirl says:

I’m hoping for something in orange!

  • Chaz says:

    Can’t wait!

  • ClippinWings says:

    D Logo.

Black mainly then Orange with gold and white “highlights”.

    Old Logo as shoulder patches.

    That would work for me.

  • Buick22 says:

Yeah the old duck faced goalie mask for the shoulder, or a California flag, and American flag on the other side…the Yotes jerseys are pretty sweet IMO, I like the flag combo if they can’t decide on a decent shoulder patch….

Here’s a few to toy with. (changed to Ducks or Anaheim as focal point)

Always a good $$$ generator for any team but as a fan really doesn’t mean much to me. But it is food for thought because the Ducks better do this right…. that early cartoon jersey still makes me sick.

There are many good examples of 3rd jerseys out there, and wonder if the Ducks are going to something of a throwback like the Flames have done, but I hope not. It is not time to bring back the past like that just yet, but liked the ClippinWing’s idea of the old logo (smaller) on the shoulders. That would be cool.

The Blues hit a home run with their 3rd jerseys big time, the Yotes did alright, but call call me crazy I really like the Wild’s old school looking sweater. But that wouldn’t work for a hockey team in the sun belt, looks like something you’d see on the pond in the 20s, classic but not right for the Ducks for another reason.

The Wild’s 3rd jersey is text and no logo… and that is basically what the Ducks have right now. Yes the “D” in Ducks is a logo of sorts it hasn’t been used like it should have been But as much as I love the current jerseys and hope they don’t change them, it is just text when you think about it.

The Ducks need to put logo to work but do it right. The last thing we need is a mistake again!

Think of my pal, the hard core Sabres fan who has yet to recover from (as he calls it) the Buffo-slug logo. I don’t think its THAT bad but many of their fans do and stick to their old school jerseys which is basically what they’re 3rd jersey is.

Oh, no solid orange please and please no CA flag because I’ll just think of our bankrupt ungovernable state and I go to the games to get away from that reality! lol

Maybe something utilizing the big “D” logo on the chest?

  • gp says:

I actually liked the “cartoon” jersey, but not for the Team. I’d like to find one now, hard to get, just for collection purposes. I have all the other thirds besides that one!

  • Tito says:

I’d like an orange jersey with enough black to rein it in a bit. And on the classic/retro side to complement the more modern one they have now. But it’s hard to pull it off without being boring at the same time. The purple/black ones were perfect, while the alternates before were just “eh” (the jade w/ purple shoulders).

And while I like the retro circular logo that teams like the Blues and Wild use (and like the Ducks’ old shoulder logo), it’s become sort of cliche now.
