Army (Burkina Faso), Army

Assessment
Burkina Faso's Army is small and poorly equipped but may have developed useful combat expertise through interventions in Liberia and elsewhere in Africa. Nevertheless, the army is relatively well-funded and motivated by African standards, although the regular army is believed to be neglected in relation to the elite presidential security regiment (RSP) and suffers increasing problems of indiscipline over pay and conditions. While the Ivorian crisis has tended to rally support around President Compaoré, he may not retain the support of his senior officers.

Deployments, tasks and operations
The main tasks of Burkina Faso's army include ensuring the country's internal and external defence, supporting the work of the national security forces, participating in peace operations and Burkina Faso's socio-economic development. Regiments are stationed in the country's six military regions.
