John Higgins Higgins will play at the World Championship next week

John Higgins has won the re-launched Scottish Professional Snooker Championship after beating Anthony McGill 6-1.

The win at the Lucky Break snooker centre in Clydebank provides a boost for Higgins ahead of the World Championship at the Crucible.

Higgins had whitewashed fellow former world champion Stephen Hendry 5-0 in his semi-final.

McGill had defeated another former world title holder, Graeme Dott, 5-3.

"I'm honoured because winning the first one in 22 years is great and it's been a great tournament," said Higgins.

"I was desperate to try and win this and Anthony was unlucky all night, missing the odd shot and I was going in and playing some good stuff.

"I think 6-1 was harsh because he didn't play as bad as that but everything went against him on what is a tough table to play on."

Looking ahead to next week's world championship, Higgins added: "This gives me more confidence because I feel I have played well all work and I hope to take this form to the Crucible."
