Ding Junhui won the final four frames of the match to overcome Stuart Bingham 13-12 in the last 16 of the World Championship at the Crucible.

The result was a double blow for Bingham with defeat costing him a place in the top 16 at the outset of next season.

Stephen Hendry is now set to start the season in the top 16 if he decides to continue playing.

The seven-times champion confessed that he was considering his future after losing 13-4 to Mark Selby earlier in the day.

Ding will face Selby in the last eight, but Bingham will wonder how the chance of victory escaped his grasp. He began the third session leading 9-7 and extended that lead to 12-9 aided by breaks of 101 and 134.

Ding produced the form that saw him win the Masters in January by reeling off three frames to level at 12-12 with breaks of 92, 114 and 58.

Bingham was first among the balls in the deciding frame, but ran out of position on a break of 30 when he seemed likely to make a match-winning contribution.

Good fortune smiled on Ding in the closing stages of the frame as he got the better of the tactical exchanges after a run of 55 to end Bingham's hopes at the tournament.

The Chinese player will play his opening session against Selby at 2.30pm on Tuesday.

Second session report

Stuart Bingham leads Ding Junhui 9-7 in the second round of the World Championship at the Crucible in Sheffield.

Bingham maintained a two-frame lead over Ding after a see-saw session that both players failed to take control of.

Ding was far from his best all evening and needed a number of chances to take a scrappy first frame of the evening.

The 24-year-old from China made a string of errors after that and Bingham kept his composure to reel off three consecutive frames to lead 8-4.

Cheered on by an enthusiastic crowd Ding pulled back within two frames with a 93 and a clearance to the pink to steal in frame 14.

The roles were reversed as Bingham fought back a 61-point deficit to clinch the next frame on the pink. But Ding finished in some style with a 91 to stay within two frames.

First session report

Stuart Bingham leads Ding Junhui 5-3 in the second round of the World Championship at the Crucible in Sheffield.

Bingham was the more consistent player and deservedly came off the better against an under-par Ding after the first session.

Bingham got off to the best possible start to pinch the opening frame with a clinical clearance on the colours as Ding struggled to settle.

A run of 59 gave the Basildon player a two-frame advantage which soon became three with another steal on the colours.

Ding showed signs of improvement with a 67 in the next but Bingham missed a great chance to steal when gifted a free-ball. When the Englishman missed and left a red on, Ding was able to finish off and reduce the deficit at the interval.

The 34-year-old from Essex took his chances with another solid frame to make it 4-2.

Neither player was able to take a frame in a single visit as chances fell to both but a 48 helped Ding on the way to taking frame seven.

But Bingham took a 5-3 lead into the evening session as the pattern of the match continued with Bingham clinching the frame on the colours with a 58.
