Secret Filming for MIDNIGHT’S CHILDREN
The film adaptation of Salman Rushdie’s acclaimed novel has been completed ‘under a cloak of secrecy’
The production for the film adaptation of Salman Rushdie's acclaimed 600-page novel, MIDNIGHT CHILDREN , which won the 1981 Booker prize and the 1993 Booker of Bookers prize, has been completed in Sri Lanka.
Canadian director Deepa Mehta chose Sri Lanka as the location for the shoot to avoid problems with religious fundamentalists. The film's cast and crew were asked to sign confidentiality agreements to protect the production from protests. After an episode of near derailment, the three-month project was completed successfully.
Salman Rushdie was heavily involved with this adaptation, having written the script and was jointly-responsible for the casting of the film. Read a sample chapter of Salman Rushdie's MIDNIGHT CHILDREN
The film adaptation will be titled WINDS OF CHANGE and will be released in English, Hindi and Urdu, in the first half of 2012 and has been pre-sold in many countries including Canada, Britain, France and Japan.

Scotland Yard to Investigate Madeleine McCann
Scotland Yard will “bring their expertise” to the search for missing Madeleine McCann.
The move comes after Kate and Gerry McCann made an impassioned appeal for David Cameron to help them revive the search for their missing daughter.
Madeleine McCann was abducted in Praia da Luz, Portugal on Thursday, 3 May 2007. Kate and Gerry McCann established Madeleine’s Fund: Leaving No Stone Unturned in 2007, to enable them to continue the search for their daughter. As there is now no law-enforcement agency in the world actively looking for Madeleine, the fund enables a small team of very committed and experienced people to investigate Madeleine’s disappearance.
It also runs awareness campaigns in several countries, to ensure the public know that Madeleine is still missing, and to encourage them to remain vigilant. There is no evidence to suggest that Madeleine has been harmed and it is therefore vital to keep looking for her and those who took her. It is for this reason that all royalties earned from the sales of Madeleine will be donated to Madeleine’s Fund.
The book goes on sale 16 May.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies on the Big Screen
Oscar winner Natalie Portman to produce the Seth Grahame-Smith adaptation.
The hilarious and hugely successful
PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES series is set to become a feature film, with tentative plans scheduled for a 2013 release.
Director Craig Gillespie has signed on to direct the film, but the film is yet to be cast. Natalie Portman was once set to take the lead role will now take on the role of producer.
Gillespie was attracted to the great mix of humour and horror of the books, "They had very witty dialogue with a lot of undertones to it. You need the juxtaposition. There’s going to be a strong gothic undertone, which ties the two genres together.
"It’s more in the world of [Tim Burton's 1999] Sleepy Hollow, where it’s somewhat stylized. We have that creative license because of the zombies."
The mash-up series reached an explosive conclusion with its third and final book,
PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES: DREADFULLY EVER AFTER , which was released earlier this month.

Elizabeth Taylor: The Lady, The Lover, The Legend, 1932–2011
The Sensational new biography by leading show business biographer David Bret
Acclaimed biographer David Bret has written the most revealing, incisive and definitive life story of Elizabeth Taylor in the sensational new biography
ELIZABETH TAYLOR: THE LADY, THE LOVER, THE LEGEND, 1932–2011 .
Available mid-April, the book is set to strip away the glossy veneer to portray the star as she really was: sometimes arrogant, attention-seeking, avaricious, reckless, monstrous towards her peers, generous, even foolish at times but, above all, through the tumultuous relationships and the personal mayhem, a survivor.
Elizabeth Taylor was the very last of the Hollywood greats. As David Bret writes, ‘Most of her contemporaries . . . were compelled to walk in the shadow of her sun. Of today’s stars, not one may be deemed worthy of stepping even within a mile of that shadow.’

The three times Miles Franklin Award shortlisted author,
Gail Jones , has received excellent reviews for her latest novel,
FIVE BELLS , from some of the nation’s most respected newspapers and media outlets.
Stella Clarke of

FIVE BELLS, inspired by Kenneth Slessor’s 1939 poem of the same title, is an exquisitely moving tale of four adults from different walks of life converging on the iconic Sydney harbour. Told over the course of a single Saturday, the four strangers, each carrying their own complicated past, are transformed by night fall when Sydney is drenched in a rainstorm. Bound together by shared patterns and symbols, the characters are brought to life by Jones’ amazing ability to reconcile ‘what is richly human with mundane and alienating aspects of our sophisticated world’.

A Novel That Makes a Difference
TO THE END OF THE LAND receives great review from the NYT
David Grossman ’s masterpiece about an Israeli mother and son and the costs of war has been praised by the New York Times.
“
TO THE END OF THE LAND manages to create and dramatize a world that gives both the reality and the echo their full due. . . the story itself, unfolded with care and truth, wit and tenderness and rare understanding. This is one of those few novels that feel as though they have made a difference to the world.”
Grossman began writing this book in May 2003, at that time, his older son was enlisted in the military service; while his younger son was due to enlist a year and a half later. “At the time,” he writes, “I had the feeling — or rather, a wish — that the book I was writing would protect him.” Three years later, his younger son was killed in battle in the final hours of the second Lebanon war.
TO THE END OF THE LAND is a profound contribution to the literature of modern life.

FLANAGAN and COETZEE Win WA Premiers Literary Awards
Both WANTING & SUMMERTIME have won WA Premier's Literary Awards for Fiction.
Due to recent reshuffling of the WA award system, the 2008 and 2009 of shortlists were announced at the same time.
WANTING by
Richard Flanagan was named the winner of the fiction prize for the 2008 award and
J.M. Coetzee was named joint winner of the 2009 fiction prize once again for
SUMMERTIME sharing the award with Craig Silvey’s book JASPER JONES. Read the Judges comments below:
In his courageous and beautiful book Flanagan weaves together a number of different stories and voices – Robinson, the protector of Aborigines, Charles Dickens, the child Mathinna, Sir John and Lady Franklin – to create a powerful study of a historical period and also to examine the idea of wanting: what different people might want, how able they are to say or to achieve it, and also what is wanting, lacking at the heart of the colonial experience. An important and disturbing Australian novel, elegant and eloquently written.Read a sample chapter
Appearing almost prosaic in its economy, the writing in Summertime nevertheless reminds us continually of Coetzee’s formidable talent. While seemingly intent on telling us that Coetzee the man is, at best, inconsequential, the assured nature of the writer and his brilliant controlled manipulation of reality, memory and truth make it certain that he appears anything but this. COETZEE Wins QLD Premier's Award
J.M. Coetzee's SUMMERTIME took home the 2010 QLD Premier's Award for Fiction.
"This extraordinary book dazzles the reader with its audacious structure. The conceit of writing a novel about a dead author who shares the same name and many life details with the living author is to be admired. What
Coetzee does, by distancing himself through his biographer and the characters that dissect the life of the late
John Coetzee , is to investigate the very nature of autobiography and fiction. This prose is impressive and follows on from his two previous books,
BOYHOOD and
YOUTH ." -

Judt was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease in 2008, a variant of motor neurone disease that left him paralysed. Tributes for the British writer, professor, political and historical commentator have been pouring in over the past few days to remember one of the giants of the intellectual world.
As well as being a political and historical essayist, Judt was also a fearless critic. His political writings have often been perceptive and prophetic. His most recent works include

Dark Story of Sydney To Be Portrayed On Stage
LEVIATHAN is being turned into a stage production by the Sydney Theatre Company
LEVIATHAN: THE UNAUTHORIZED BIOGRAPHY OF SYDNEY by
John Birmingham takes an intriguing, and sometimes brutal look at Sydney’s immigrant history. Beneath the shining harbour, amid the towers of global greed and deep inside the bad-drugs madness of the suburban wastelands, lies Sydney's shadow history.
The Sydney Theatre Company stage adaptation of the book, titled THE RESIDENTS IN LEVIATHAN is being directed by Stefo Nantsout, the company's resident director. The production promises to blend factual recreation of early penal settlement, accounts of racism and abuse taken from
John Birmingham ’s original book and scenes inspired by interviews with the communities involved.
This production will come to life at Hurstville Entertainment Centre on 18 and 19 September, and Liverpool’s Casula Powerhouse on 24 September. It will also be culminated in a special performance at Sydney Theatre Company’s Open Day at The Wharf, Walsh Bay, in December 2010.

Susan Boyle's Autobiography!
Susan Boyle, star on the television show, BRITAIN'S GOT TALENT, will publish her autobiography this year.
Random House will publish Susan Boyle’s autobiography, THE WOMAN I WAS BORN TO BE, towards the end of the year. Susan Boyle became famous for her appearance on the British television show, BRITAIN'S GOT TALENT in 2009.
When reflecting on this experience and looking forward to her new book, Boyle stated:
‘When I strutted onto the stage for that audition, I was a scared wee lassie, still grieving for my mother, not caring how I looked. I think I’ve grown up a lot in the last year, become more of a lady, and I’m not so frightened anymore. I’m writing this book to try to show that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, and I hope it will benefit other people. My story demonstrates that you shouldn’t just look at the label, you should look at the whole person, emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually, and I hope that telling it will show that dreams are not impossible, if you’ve got courage and a willingness to go on no matter what the circumstances.’

Miles Franklin Shortlist
THE BOOK OF EMMETT by Deborah Forster has been shortlisted for the 2010 Miles Franklin Award!
We have received some wonderful news this morning, THE BOOK OF EMMETT , by Deborah Forster that we published as an original Vintage in April last year has been shortlisted for the 2010 Miles Franklin Award. At the announcement this morning it was noted that first novels are very, very rarely shortlisted for the Miles Franklin, Australia’s most prestigious literary award.
The judges had this (and lots more) to say of the book:
'A first novel of subtle achievement, THE BOOK OF EMMETT stands out from a flood of tales on domestic abuse. Written with no-nonsense poise and leavened by wry humour, it never shies from the stunting consequences on the lives of those affected of the trauma of emotional and physical violence. Despite this, it is a poignant story of survival with memorable characters – a salute to tenacity and a touching marker of lost potential.'

Based on the book Emergency Sex and Other Desperate Measures: A True Story From Hell on Earth , the series will focus on "the larger-than-life exploits of expatriate nongovernment-organization workers who find their sanity tested in the face of atrocities, loneliness, and primal desires." If there's one thing HBO knows how to do, it's a sexy drama series (True Blood and Tell Me You Love Me immediately come to mind). Beaufoy, Bello, and Crowe have talent coming out of their ears, so this definitely sounds a project worth checking out.

Flanagan Makes New Yorker's Best Books List
WANTING by Richard Flanagan is on the NEW YORKER reviewers’ list of favourites for 2009.
"Flanagan sets his novel in the wilds of nineteenth-century Tasmania and evokes its inhabitants with exquisite precision: a silver-haired sawyer’s hands are “like a sea eagle’s nest made of gnarled eucalypt branches”; a stolid bureaucratic type is “mastiff-faced, full-bodied and goose-bellied, heavy in all things—opinion, sensibility, morality and conversation.” The narrative scope is ambitious; we move between the story of a young Aboriginal woman wrenched from her family by the broody and bored wife of the British governor, and an account of Charles Dickens’s extramarital affairs. The connection between the two is slight (Dickens co-wrote a play about the governor’s ill-fated search for the northwest passage), but Flanagan forges from them an entirely unified meditation on desire, “the cost of its denial, the centrality and force of its power in human affairs.”

Man Asian Literary Prize Goes to Chinese Bestseller
Su Tong's political fable THE BOAT TO REDEMPTION takes $10,000 award
The story of a playboy Communist party official who castrates himself after he is banished to live on a river barge has won celebrated Chinese author Su Tong the Man Asian literary prize.
Su, by far the best known of the five shortlisted authors, is the second Chinese writer to win the three-year-old prize, which is worth $10,000 (£6,000). Judges, including the authors Colm Tóibín and Pankaj Mishra, said in a joint statement that his winning title, The Boat to Redemption, was "a picaresque novel of immense charm".
"It is also a political fable with an edge which is both comic and tragic, and a parable about the journeys we take in our lives, the distance between the boat of our desires and the dry land of our achievement," they said in a statement. Set during the Cultural Revolution, the novel tells the story of a womanising official who tries to rebuild his life on a boat with his young son after his lineage as the son of a revolutionary mother is questioned. "I'm not sure if The Boat to Redemption can help overseas readers know more about
China
. It's just a novel centering on the fate of people caught in an absurd time," Su told China Daily.

WANTING on Library Best Books List
Richard Flanagan's WANTING named one of the year's best by Library Journal.
When LJ’s book review editors sit down with our best books candidates, we’re obviously looking for the strongest writing on key topics—books that will last. But we aren’t just thinking in terms of Big Books: we’ve found that unimpeachably big books are often unimpeachably dull. So we look for a little edginess, a little risk that sets a book apart and makes us sit up and see things anew even when the narrative isn’t perfect.

Forgotten Children Get a Formal Apology
The Federal Government says today's national apology to the Forgotten Australians and former child migrants marks a significant step forward in the healing process.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull will, today, apologise to the 500,000 Australians who grew up in institutions, orphanages and foster care.
David Hill's bestselling book THE FORGOTTEN CHILDREN is both a tribute to the children who were betrayed by an ideal that went terribly awry and a compelling account of an extraordinary episode in Australian–British History.
This book is a heartbreaker you can’t put down, a calmly narrated and impeccably researched tale of children from poor British families transported to Australia not in the eighteenth but in the twentieth century; of their bewildered and graphic adventures under the emotional and physical parsimony of the Fairbridge Farm School ... The reader yearns to reach out to the children who, say, are given guns to shoot rabbits and use them to suicide instead. For Hill to be able to detail the story in such clinical detail is itself a triumph of spirit and craft and humane forgiveness.’ TOM KENEALLY

PRECIOUS breaks box office records in the US
The film Precious: Based on the novel Push by Sapphire is off to an astonishing start in the US – breaking box office records.
PRECIOUS, based on the novel Push by Sapphire, is the kind of story that is rarely told, about a character who society usually writes off, judges as a statistic, or simply ignores. Directed by Lee Daniels, PRECIOUS is set in 1987 Harlem and tells the story of Claireece “Precious” Jones (Gabourey Sidibe), an overweight, illiterate teen pregnant with her second child who’s life takes a new direction when she is invited to enrol in an alternative school.
Critics and audiences have been equally enamoured of PRECIOUS, with the film already receiving several accolades including winner of the Grand Jury Prize (Dramatic) at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, and winner of the Audience Award at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival.
“Precious simply cannot be missed, for under its tough skin the film is an unabashedly inspirational anthem; it offers the rare ecstasy of human regeneration, and the discovery, on Harlem's mean streets, of a precious gem.” TIME MAGAZINE
“A heart-rending journey to self-acceptance and hope.” EMPIRE MAGAZINE *****

New Ian McEwan
Random House is delighted to announce the publication of a new novel by Ian McEwan, SOLAR.
SOLAR is an engrossing and satirical novel which focuses on climate change and will be published on 18 March 2010. This story – of one man’s ambitions and self-deceptions – is a stylish new work by one of the word’s greatest living writers.
Michael Beard is in his late fifties; bald, overweight, unprepossessing – a Nobel prize-winning physicist whose best work is behind him. Trading on his reputation, he speaks for enormous fees, lends his name to the letterheads of renowned scientific institutions and half-heartedly heads a government-backed initiative tackling global warming. An inveterate philanderer, Beard finds his fifth marriage floundering. But this time it is different: she is having the affair, and he is still in love with her.
When Beard’s professional and personal worlds are entwined in a freak accident, an opportunity presents itself, a chance for Beard to extricate himself from his marital mess, reinvigorate his career and very possibly save the world from environmental disaster.
Dan Franklin, Publisher, comments: ‘SOLAR is a novel about one of the most serious threats to our world – global warming – but is also very, very funny. It shows a fresh side to Ian McEwan’s work, that he’s a comic writer of genius.’

Impressive Guardian Review of WANTING
Some books leave you altered in small imperceptible ways. They change who you are.
"One of the jobs of historical novelists is to uncover those secret histories which, for one reason or another, professional historians have overlooked. Often this involves the apperception of a narrative where others might simply have seen discontinuities. Best known for 2001's internationally acclaimed Gould's Book of Fish, which considered life at a penal station on the west coast of Tasmania through the work of the convict painter William Buelow Gould, Richard Flanagan is a master of this particular art."

Stunning NYT Review for Niffenegger
"HER FEARFUL SYMMETRY is as atmospheric and beguiling as a walk through Highgate itself."
Dearest e,
I told you I would let you know — so here it is — goodbye.
I try to imagine what it would feel like if it was you — but it’s impossible to conjure the world without you, even though we’ve been apart so long.
I didn’t leave you anything. You got to live my life. That’s enough. Instead I’m experimenting — I’ve left the whole lot to the twins. I hope they’ll enjoy it.

MOONWALK Michael Jackson’s only autobiography is to be re-released by Random House Australia in October 2009.
William Heinemann was the original publisher in the UK and Transworld in Australia when MOONWALK was published in 1988. BOG CHILD Wins Carnegie
Siobhan Dowd has been awarded the 2009 CILIP Carnegie Medal posthumously for her wonderful novel BOG CHILD
Dowd wrote BOG CHILD in 2007, just before her death from cancer. It’s a beautifully written novel, set in Northern Ireland in 1981 at the height of the Troubles, and it tells a story of growing up against a background of sectarian violence. It features a wonderful male character, and is a leading example of quality YA writing that appeals to both teens (girls and boys) and adults.
“Siobhan Dowd was a writing phenomenon. She wrote and delivered four completely different books of the highest possible standard in less than three years, a completely unprecedented rate of production in my publishing experience. None of them needed much editing. She had the seemingly effortless empathetic ability to transport the reader into the lives of her characters. And then, wonder of wonders, she was blessed with an almost pitch-perfect sense of story structure. It hardly bears thinking about what she might have achieved if she had lived.” said David Fickling, who edited all of Dowd’s books
We have just released her last novel SOLACE OF THE ROAD and I believe it’s her most commercial book yet. Siobhan has many fans in Australia (including myself) especially in the education market and if anybody gets a chance to get their hands on a copy of BOG CHILD or SOLACE OF THE ROAD please do!

This is a story not only of an extraordinary horse once thought hopeless whose status bolted from reject to hero, but of a man born in a workers' camp in Germany at the end of WWII, a battler who lived every bushie trainer's dream - to own a champion - and who even got to swap horse talk with the Queen.

Anthony Browne Named Children's Laureate
At a ceremony held at Paramount Centre this morning Anthony Browne was named as the Children’s Laureate for 2009-11
Random House Children's Books is proud to publish every Children’s Laureate, Anthony follows in the footsteps of Quentin Blake, Anne Fine, Michael Morpurgo, Jacqueline Wilson and Michael Rosen. Anthony was absolutely delighted to accept the honour, he will be using his term as Laureate to highlight the importance of pictures books to children, and to adults.
On being chosen as Laureate:
“It's an honour to be the Children's Laureate for 2009-11. I'm well aware of the amazing things achieved by the five previous Laureates, and I'm in awe of their commitment and hard work. Picture books are special - they're not like anything else. Sometimes I hear parents encouraging their children to read what they call proper books (books without pictures), at an earlier and earlier age. This makes me sad, as picture books are perfect for sharing, and not just with the youngest children. As a father, I understand the importance of the bond that develops through reading picture books with your child. We have in Britain some of the best picture book makers in the world, and I want to see their books appreciated for what they are - works of art.”
The role of Children's Laureate is awarded once every two years to an eminent writer or illustrator of children's books to celebrate outstanding achievement in their field.

ABC TV discusses RANSOM
It's not too late to catch ABC TV talking about David Malouf's latest masterpiece
The verdict is in and it must be said RANSOM is a masterpiece. If you missed The First Tuesday Book Club last night on ABC TV you can catch it this Sunday at 4.35pm or on ABC2 at 7.00pm. So set that recorder because you don't want to miss it.
While you wait here is just one of the stellar reviews.
'Ransom, his first novel in 10 years it must be said at once is a masterpiece, exquisitely written, pithy and wise and overwhelmingly moving, constructed with invisible, successful craft that leaves the reader wondering how in the world it had been done. ... fiction, in Malouf's hands, becomes the art of rendering the world coherent. For this we must be grateful.

ANGELS & DEMONS Number 1
Dan Brown’s ANGELS & DEMONS has stormed straight to the top of the UK The Sunday Times Bestsellers list this week, ahead of novelists Martina Cole and Victoria Hislop. This film tie-in edition coincides with the worldwide release of the Ron Howard/Tom Hanks movie based on the book.
Astonishingly, this is the first time in the UK at Number 1 on the charts for Brown’s debut Robert Langdon thriller – which preceded his phenomenal international bestseller The Da Vinci Code. In fact, it was The Da Vinci Code itself in both editions (original and film tie-in) which blocked the coveted top slot for
ANGELS & DEMONS back in the summer of 2006, when both were jostling to head up the official lists and outselling other brand name novelists.
Domination of the bestsellers is nothing new to author Dan Brown.
THE DA VINCI CODE is the bestselling adult paperback novel of all time, racking up over 5 million copies sold in the UK and 81 million copies in print world wide. Current sales of this new edition of
ANGELS & DEMONS take it to total life sales of just over 2.8 million copies, cementing its position as second bestselling adult paperback novel of all time since records began in 1997*
Further records are set to be broken this autumn.
THE LOST SYMBOL , Brown’s new Robert Langdon thriller, will have a global English language first print run of 6.5 million copies, the largest first printing in the history of Random House worldwide. It has already been predicted to be the biggest selling book of the year, and will be published on 15th September 2009.

It will once again feature Dan Brown’s unforgettable protagonist, Robert Langdon. Brown’s longterm US editor, Jason Kaufman, Vice President and Executive Editor at Random House Inc imprint Doubleday, said: “Nothing ever is as it first appears in a Dan Brown novel. The Lost Symbol is full of surprises." “This novel has been a strange and wonderful journey,” said Brown. “Weaving five years of research into the story’s 12-hour timeframe was an exhilarating challenge.
