ADMINISTRATOR

THE ADMINISTRATOR serves as a “Deputy Lieutenant Governor” and carries out the constitutional functions of the Crown if the Lieutenant Governor is absent, ill, or otherwise unable to perform his role. The Administrator acts in this capacity at the request of His Honour or the provincial government.

As Chief Justice of Ontario, the Honourable Warren K. Winkler serves as Administrator. Since 1958 the Chief Justice of Ontario has held a standing appointment as Administrator of the Government. If the Chief Justice is unavailable, another Chief or Associate Chief Justice from the Court of Ontario is appointed by the Governor General-in-Council to act as Administrator.

When performing the ceremonial duties of the office, the Administrator is entitled to be called Your Honour and to receive the “Vice-regal Salute”, a guard of honour, and 15-gun salute.
