Xin’an Ancient City, located in the hinterland of Nantou Peninsula, belongs to Nanshan District. As the ruin of an ancient city with a long history, it has an area of about 70,000 m2. Nantou Ancient City was first built in the 331st of the Eastern Jin Dynasty. At that time Nantou played quite an important part that the Dongguan County Government and Bao’an County Government were there. In the Tang Dynasty, the administration center moved to Dongguan City, and Nantou became to the military center. As a result of growing population, the Ming Dynasty set up Xin’an Country, which means “reforming the past and taking a turn for the better”, when present Hongkong was within the jurisdiction area of Xin’an Country. At the end of Qing Dynasty, the government gave the order to prohibit going to sea in the southeast coast in order to avert attacks by Zheng Chenggong. People were forced to leave their land and moved to the interior 80 kilometers far away from it, and Xin’an Country was released with only thousands of people left in the northern mountains. In 1669, the Qing dynasty reset up Xin’an Country since Guangdong Provincial Governor Wang Lairen represented again and again.

The present ancient city was built in Hongwu 27th of the Ming Dynasty (1934). Being anomalous rectangle, the foundation was made of yellow mud and silt sand, and was surrounded by trenches. The bases of the north and south walls still exit, and the south gate is also in a good state of preservation. As the remains of Lingnan ancient culture, the quaint spectacular Xin’an Ancient City experiences and records the historical change of Shenzhen area. Nowadays the first phase to refurbish the ancient city had completed, while the arch, the south gate, the County Government Office, Xin’an Prison, Coastal Defense Office, Dongguan Guild Hall, Guandi Temple, Wen Tianxiang Memorial Temple, the Hop Joint, Juxiu Pavilion, Yili Pawnshop and Taomigong Qianzhuang are planned to repair.
