  FY 2012 President's Budget: On February 14, 2011, President Obama submitted to Congress his FY 2012 budget request for all federal agencies – the “FY 2012 President’s Budget.” Included in this request is a proposed FY 2012 budget for the National Institutes of Health of $32 billion. National Institutes of Health Funding for Diseases, Conditions, and Research FY 2007 - FY 2012

  • NIH categorizes its spending in a variety of manners to satisfy diverse reporting requirements. Spending is tracked for specific Diseases (Alzheimer' s Disease, Breast Cancer, etc.), for various conditions (Infertility, Obesity, etc.) and specific areas of research (Genetics, Substance Abuse, etc.). See, FY 2007 – FY 2012 Funding Estimates, for our latest estimates. This table provides actual expenditures for FY 2007 through FY 2010, and projected expenditures (based on the current year funding level and the President' s Budget funding level) for FY 2011 and 2012. The projected expenditures are updated each year.

Important Notes:

  • The current year (FY 2011) and budget year (FY 2012) dollar amounts provided represents NIH best estimate on what will be funded for the categories. The figures provided are not allocated or set aside for these categories.
  • The table does not reconcile mathematically. Funding included in one area may also be included in other areas. For example, Clinical Research includes Clinical Trials.

The Office of Budget (OB) advises and supports the Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on budget policy issues affecting the NIH, the medical research community and the public. The OB participates in the following:

  • Development of all NIH’s budget projections.
  • Maintains active and efficient communications with HHS, OMB and the Congress.
  • Monitors and coordinates NIH budget activities of the 27 NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs).

The three branches that comprise the OB organization are:

  • Budget Formulation, Presentation & Execution Branch
  • Budget Analysis and Modeling Branch
  • Budget Reporting and Legislative Branch
