Naples

Naples, the ancient "Neapolis", is rich in historical, artistic and cultural traditions and gastronomy. Between 1266 and 1861, Naples was the capital of the Kingdom of Naples (later of the Two Sicilies), usually simply indicated as "the Kingdom", other Italian states having different denominations. This history, coupled with its size, has given Naples the unofficial status of being the capital of the Italian south (“Il Mezzogiorno”).

In 1995 the Historic Centre of Naples was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Although Naples is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and rich in history and monuments, it is sometimes overlooked by mass tourism and is less visited than other Italian cities. There are, however, many attractions within the city. Naples has 448 historical churches.
While having a stroll in the city centre you can for example visit Santa Chiara, a religious complex that includes the Church of Santa Chiara, a monastery, tombs and an archaeological museum. Famous is the cloister of the Clarisses, transformed in 1742 by Vaccaro with the addition of precious majolica tiles in Rococo style. The Nuns' Choir houses fragments of frescoes by Giotto.
Another must to see while walking in Naples' centre is the Cathedral of Naples (or Duomo), the main church of Naples, dedicated to San Gennaro (St. Januarius), the city's patron. The church houses a vial of the Saint's blood that is brought out twice a year, on the first Saturday in May and 19 September, and usually liquefies.  Thousands of persons assemble to witness this event in the cathedral of Naples each year. According to legend if the blood should fail to liquefy, then something bad will happen to Naples.

In Naples you can also easily attend an Italian opera, in the San Carlo Theatre, or you can easily reach world-renowned islands as glamorous Capri and splendid Ischia, in the Mediterranean Sea.
