Icy roads claim lives

Update: 4 December 2004 - Landslides have taken a back seat with the approach of winter but it is no relief for the travelers over stretches of icy roads.

Over the last few days, two people lost their lives in separate incidents and several people were injured along the lateral road.

About two kilometers from Pelela one person died after the Landcruiser he was traveling in skidded off the road. One passenger was severely injured while three escaped unhurt.

An hour later, a Maruti car skidded on the same spot and went off the road. However, none of the four passengers were injured.

In another accident on November 26, a Maruti van skidded and plunged about 350 meters below the road killing one of the two passengers on the spot. It took place at Khandupang, between Ura and Thrumshingla, about 60 kilometers from Chamkhar.

The other passenger was evacuated to the JDWNRH in critical condition and later to India.

According to the road transport officer (RTO) of the Road Safety Transport Authority, Thimphu, the number of accidents along the lateral road increased during winter due to icy roads.

The RSTA has warned travellers and appointed road inspectors along the highways.

Our inspectors make sure that there is no speeding, unlicensed driving and drink driving to ensure the safety of the road users, said the RTO.

We also advise the drivers at the bus terminal to be always careful while driving and discourage them from over-loading their buses, he added.
