National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) celebrates its 20th anniversary with help from Senator Mitch McConnell and the nationally syndicated show America's Most Wanted (AMW) at a reception on Capitol Hill. The original cosponsors of the Missing Children's Assistance Act of 1984, which established NCMEC, will be honored along with President Ronald W. Reagan for opening NCMEC's doors on June 13, 1984. Supporters from across the country will gather to recognize the work of NCMEC and those who mobilized the missing children's movement. Letters of support from President George W. Bush and First Lady Nancy Reagan will be read during the reception. |
WHY: |
President Reagan envisioned NCMEC as a public-private partnership, taking the best of both worlds to better protect America's children. NCMEC will honor his leadership and those whose support had led to the organization's success. Working in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, NCMEC has assisted in the recovery of more than 83,000 missing children and handled more than 250,000 reports of child sexual exploitation since its inception in 1984.
