About Winter Solstice |
Winter Solstice Day is observed on coinciding with the seventh day of the eleventh month of the Bhutanese calendar. The day of the winter solstice is the shortest day and the longest night of the year. It is a national holiday of Bhutan. This day is celebrated by the Bhutanese of eastern and central Bhutan with feasting and archery, as nothing productive can be done on this day. This causes the Sun to appear at its farthest below the celestial equator when viewed from the far hemisphere. The western Bhutan people do not celebrate much. “We stay at home and wait for the day to pass”. In Bhutan the winter solstice is celebrated as an official holiday. |
